Gas Pool Heater Heat Exchanger Condensation Year Round

Southwest Michigan. 24x44 pool is enclosed with an enclosure from Excelite: Leading Pool Enclosure Company.. 350,000 btu Hayward natural gas heater is currently outside, but under a roof, so protected from all the elements…except the cold. I keep the water at 83 degrees.

Will I have a problem with heat exchanger condensation if I keep the temperature at 83 year round? I can move it into the pump house and add a vent, etc., but the room would not be conditioned, and according to combustible air requirements, I’d have to put vents in the walls anyway.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You run the risk of parts of the heater freezing up in the winter.

Hopefully you have a VSP and can run it at a slower RPM 24/7, per the Hayward instructions for freezing weather. If not, you still need to run it continuously or risk freezing and much damage.
