San Antonio
Hi there! New member and new pool owner. We bought our first short term rental property in San Antonio, and it has a pool that we are excited about. However there’s no heater. And we’ve lost about 6-7k of bookings between now and The end of march because of this! So feeling pretty bummed.
- My question is, what would be overall better for our situation to heat the pool during the winter, spring and fall? Gas heater seems way more expensive to run and honestly probably cost the same since we have to have a gas line installed.
- My concern about the heat pump though is will it heat up fast enough to use as a rental? Like is it something I can just have running every few days to keep it semi warm in case the next guests want it?
- Also which is more user friendly so my guests don’t mess up my pool?
- And is there a semi affordable way to automate and gain control over the heat pump since we live 2 hours away?
SO MANY QUESTIONS as a first time pool owner, wow. Grateful I found this forum.

I’m a HUGE fan of heat pumps and love ours, but a natural gas heater is perfect for a rental. The ability to turn off the heater when the property isn’t rented out combined with the ability to heat almost year round makes natural gas the clear winner in my eyes.

Welcome to TFP.

I assume you have natural gas at the house. Check the gas meter data plate for the CFM capacity. Understand if you will need to upgrade your gas service for a large pool heater.

Post a pic of the gas meter data plate.

How many gallons in your pool?
