Backstory - Got a friend who inherited a pool last summer. I got her using the troublefree pool method and she bought the TF-100 test kit and downloaded the app. I've been using troublefree method since 2008. When she "opened" her pool last year, we tested CYA of 100 (not uncommon as previous owner probably pucked it to death), I don't believe she tested at end of season last year (she's currently unavail. to chat). Fast forward to this spring and after she left her pool open over the winter (unbeknownst to me) and, of course, it turned into a swamp, she tests CYA and got....ZERO. Told her to wait until pool clears and retest....ZERO. I then instructed to dose CYA only to 30 (she did about three weeks ago, maybe more). Now fast forward to yesterday and she contacted me, she's got a cloudy pool that's been eating chlorine by the gallon each day (she's using 10% chlrorinating liquid) and has gone through 30 gallons since beginning of season! I went over there and pool is cloudy, doesn't appear to be algae (doesn't look green or miscolored but she also has a very dark bottom pool), forgot to grab a pic!! (Grrrr).
Anyway, here's the test results....
7/2/2024 9:15am
FC= 0 (This after she added a gallon early evening the night prior)
CC= 0
ph = 8.2
CYA = 0 (I'm dumbfounded, clear as day all the way to the top of tube)
TA = 110
I did identify one issue she was having, she failed to see that when she was inputting 8.2 into app, that it was telling her to add 17oz of dry acid.....she was adding Borax each time (Doh!), so pH might be a bit higher than 8.2 (top of my color scale). No other chemicals beyond what's mentioned has been added. We did have "heat dome" for about 4 or 5 days, but weather on either side has been reasonable (low 70's to mid-80's) here in Central NY.
I'm scratching my head here, she did make it to "sparklypoolitis" about mid-way through season last year. She's, rightfully, mad at her boyfriend for not closing the pool properly and says she's learned her lesson. Would like to know how to proceed, I want to get this pH down I think....and if you guys/gals think I should, what's best way? And what the heck with CYA??? What is going on here?? I am the one who first tested the pool, always following the additional instructions of allowing water to warm to room temp, etc., and I got 100 in Spring of 2023
Thank you in advance for any and all help, I used to help others when I finally got the hang of things and then changed jobs, kid got into sports, and well...life got in the way of coming to the forum!!
Have a Happy 4th everyone!!!!
