Fresh water salt system on new hot tub

I've never had a hot tub and ordered one with a fresh water salt system. I was recently told that the salt system doesn't work well in NM due to harder water and fails quickly. The dealer assured me that remedies exist to take care of hard water. Then I read that salt water splash from the tub will damage the new concrete patio. Finally, I saw an online video saying that hot tub salt systems, unlike pools, release carcinogens in the steam that are hazardous. Any information anyone can provide would be appreciated.

A,

Not sure where you get your info, but I suggest that you find a much more reliable source.. Everything you said (read) above is absolutely false.

Just think about it logically for a few minutes... If the salt level is a pool or spa would eat up a concrete deck, why are the millions of miles of concrete next to the ocean, which has 10 times the salt content of a spa or pool, not all wasted away???

Sorry, but you need to put the internet down...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks for response. On YouTube, I viewed Salt Water Hot Tubs Review by Chris Wheatley. He has a series of videos on hot tubs I started watching since I have ZERO experience. I joined this forum to get a wider perspective from folks with personal experience. I just spoke with salesperson and she said the same as you about splash damage. She’s going to watch the video and talk to a company rep about its claims.

I have the caldera freshwater system on stained concrete 10 feet from my saltwater pool. Concrete sees a ton of splash from the pool. So do all pool decks around saltwater pools! No issues. I love the hot tub!

We have hard water and had to use the softener thing to bring our calcium down. Now I’ll just fill the pool with softened water (should have done that to start with). Calcium has been fine ever since.

I’ve been really happy with the freshwater system. I have no idea why anyone would say the spa SWCG emits carcinogenic steam... I don’t know why it would work any differently from a pool SWCG either.

Let us know what you find out!

LG 1978,

So... Why is it called a "freshwater" SWCG? I assume it still uses salt, or maybe some type of salt they call something else, and sell for some outrageous mark up...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Well, you’re right, it’s a stupid name. But I think the idea is that you don’t have to change the water as often. The water stays “fresher.” But it’s saltwater, so...

We’ve had it since May and haven’t had to change the SWCG cartridge yet. They are expensive at 3 for $250, but I’ve been really happy with the water quality and overall ease of use. Much easier to deal with than the pool (which isn’t exactly hard!). I’m happy to be using chlorine instead of bromine in the spa and to not have to add chemicals myself. I salute those who manually add chlorine to their spas!

lg,

What is in the cartridges??? Salt?

Jim R.

Looks like it. And for an even better experience they want you to use their silver ionizor also. Silver boosts the chlorine according to their website.

No one has ever mentioned the silver thing to me at least. I have read about it though, and it confused me when I was researching the salt system. As far as I understand, the spa just generates chlorine like a SWCG does for a pool and that’s all that’s going in my water.

I watched the video the OP mentioned. The video reviewer complains that chlorine in your steam is a carcinogen. I am not concerned. He also makes a big deal about salt water splashing on your decking...I’m not at all concerned about that!

It looks like that would be what it is. To me at least. This is what they said about the silver thing.

Even with the FreshWater™ Salt System installed and in operation, hot tub owners can continue to supplement water care. By inserting a silver cartridge into the hot tub filter, they can treat their water with ionized silver. The anti-microbial silver ions created by the low-maintenance Silver Stick cartridges work with the chlorine generated by the FreshWater™ Salt System to eliminate viruses and bacteria. The Silver Stick cartridge last four months, so it can be replaced at the same time as FreshWater™ Salt System cartridge.

I’m not buying the virus/bacteria Mumbo jumbo but you will be vampire free at least.

Haha! As tempting as that is, I think I’ll stick with my chlorine and plain vanilla filter. Guess I need to clean the filter soon... we haven’t given the hottub heavy use this summer so I haven’t been thinking about it much.
