Well our plumbing escaped damage as far as we can tell, everything is running ok. Several coping stones cracked and one even dropped a baseball sized chunk, and lots of tile fell off or is about to. We were going to replace the tile and coping stones anyways, so we didn’t really come out too bad.
I did notice that on the top step there are all these chips out of the pebble coating. It seems to be just on the top step. Is this something that can be patched? (I did a search through the forum but only found people doing total resurfacing jobs).

No, it cannot be patched. You can live with the way it is until you are ready to resurface.

Is the only function for grip/aesthetic? We might be do for a resurface anyways, but I wasn’t planning on it this year so we might wait.

The plaster waterproofs the gunite. It looks like you still have a layer of plaster and the gunite is not exposed. As long as the pool does not leak water then it is esthetic.

Following. I noticed the same chipping in my spa. The freeze protection tends to lower my spa water and the pebble sheen was exposed to below freezing temperature with ice and snow on it. I assume the freeze caused the chipping. I contacted the plaster installer and am waiting for them to get back to me.
