Is the best way to fight freezing temps to manually change the suction and discharge valves so that my pump is pulling from the spa drain, pool drain, and skimmer at the same time? Additionally so that my pump is returning water into both the pool and spa simultaneously?

Most around here leave the pool open all winter (East Tennessee), but we will get single digits and teens here and there.

This will be my second winter and I want it to go a bit more smoothly than last year.

With automation, you should be able to enable Freeze Protection for spa and pool and the valves will switch automatically.
Or, if you wish, adjust the valves so you get water flow through all the systems.

Thanks and yes I do have automation. But it just seems at those temperatures it would be better to have it going through all piping at all times. Just my amateur opinion but was hoping to get the opinion of the boards as well

If the system will be in Freeze Protect every night or for long periods of time, then yes it would be best to set the valving as necessary and leave it.

Just be ware to change it back when freeze protect stops being a normal thing.
