First time pool owner, have an awful time and need advice on drain issue

using the 5.7% available Chlorine as written on the bottle

In PoolMath put the 6% as shown on the bottle. Not the 5.7%

The acid amount is correct. Enter the data as described into PoolMath.

Here's an update and we need help!

Ok, we are working on this process for the past few hours. But running into questions, here's what we have done so far:

At- 10 am, we were at 0FC and incidentally the PH was at 7.2
At- 11 am, 6.5 FC and 1CC and 7.5 TC
At- 12:30, 8.5 FC and 0 CC and 8.5 TC
Cya <20 (probably 0)

In one of the articles it says that you can't backwash/clean the filter for a week once you add the CYA. I'm not sure how anything will get clean like that esp since we only have one line running. It's brown/green right now, it's about 1pm and 90degrees. Do we put the CYA into the pool and follow those rules of not backwashing all that time? I worry because I'm pretty sure we still have dirt in the pool and I really don't think our filter will last 24hours without being backwashed. We do it multiple times a day.

If you used the sock method to add the CYA to the pool, then it is ok to backwash the filter. If granules of DE were just tossed into the pool it takes them longer to dissolve, and if you vacuum them up they go into the filter, and then get backwashed out.

I'll try and explain the best I can when I get the chance later. Basically, just take all of your numbers and put them in the left side of the PoolMath making sure you have the correct amount of water in the very top left. The boxes on the right side is where you want to be. If the values already there don't watch where you want them to be, change them manually. Hit calculate and it will tell you what you need to adjust.

Update:

6pm-FC 10.5, CC 1, TC 11.5
8pm-FC 13, CC 1.5, TC 14.5

It's a little after 8pm and we'll be going to bed around 10 or so. We'll keep checking til then but we are expecting rain tonight.

1--Anything we need to do in preparation for that. How will it affect our numbers tomorrow am? Or in general, do we add extra chlorine for overnights?
2--Should we start to see any difference tomorrow am in the color? (please note, we only have one working line)
3--We haven't backwashed since starting the process. It's been holding steady at 10. Should we backwash before we go to bed since the filter will be running all night and it's been running all day non-stop. Our pool guy said to backwash at 20.
4--How tethered do we have to be to the pool tomorrow (after the first 24 hours). We have two small kids and while we want this to work, we don't want to lose valuable weekends with them since we work all week. We've essentially lost the whole summer already.

Rain of normal amounts does not effect anything.

Most pools get to cloudy blue in 24 hours or less.

Backwash when your filter pressure rises 25% over your clean pressure. If you are unsure about overnight put the filter on recirculate.

If you can at least check the FC and dose with LC every 3 or 4 hours tomorrow that will be good.

THANK YOU!!! We had no clue about recirculating, thanks for the tip. I think we're going to let it keep going all night and see what tomorrow brings.
 
Hi All,

Update: Lots and lots of rain today so we've been able to check every 1-2 hours. So we've been keeping at SLAM level with adding liquid chlorine as needed. The CYA has dissolved and that level is fine. But there's not much improvement at all. My hubs said it's a tad lighter but I don't see it, last week we were able to see to the shallow end a tiny bit and today-nothing. Also, there's this foamy stuff at top--what is this?

So I know for "most" pools after 24 hours it should be better but we have the unique situation of one only line (skimmer line working) so I know we have to manage our expectations more. What is everyone's thoughts on the progress thus far? We've been at SLAM for about 30 hours (give or take).

Danielle I have been watching your thread along with the help that all the mods have been recommending. I am pulling for you and your family and hope to see some blue water for you guys soon.

I think that people would like to see the actual numbers of your tests just to confirm exactly what is going on. They may see something that would be a reason to adjust some of the chemicals you are adding to your pool. Just my .02, but I would post a couple of your test values with the times that each was taken.

Keep at it, I think your on the right track.

Clearing green pools with the SLAM Process process has taken days for many. 30 hours is not long.

What is your latest CYA and FC test?

Thanks Jay! I need all the good thoughts I can get. If I can get at least a week out of this pool with my family this summer, I will be grateful. If I can have the pool open for my daughter's party on the 29th, that would be AMAZING!!! BUT after that I have another issue I'll be posting about regarding the liner! hahaha

I did post my results from yesterday, I think they're about the same but definitely open to advice.

Today's are:
8am-PH 7.2, FC9, CC1, TC10, CYA 38, ALK 120
10am-FC 12, CC 1.5, TC 13.5
12pm-FC 12.5, CC 1.5, TC 14
3:15-FC 11.5, CC1, TC 12.5
6:30-FC 12.5, CC1, TC 13.5
9:15-FC 11.5, CC1.5, TC 13

Adding 1 gallon now and that's it for the night.

Forgot to add, we have done our best to get as much dirt out as possible but I'm sure there's still some in there that we can't get to. How much does that affect this process?

PS--so anyone know what that foamy white is??
