First time opening | Need help

I guess I am okay to just let the FC drift down to recommended levels?
Yes.
Also, I am nervous about putting my steps back in.... any advise to keep algae from developing under steps? Drill holes?
Post a picture of the steps...in general, keep your FC at the top of the recommended range. Never let it get to minimum.

I thought about drilling a few holes on each side to help with water flow.

Also, should I remove this AquaSmarte canister from the return line? I'm obviously not using it anymore... but I thought maybe it would be okay to use as a chlorinator while on vacation?
What was in there before? NEVER mix chemical usage in a container...If it was used for pucks, you can use it for pucks. If it was used for any other chemical, you should not put pucks in it.

These were in it before... (I think they were just filled with tiny tabs)
When it ran out, I just used a razor knife and cut the top off and added 3" tabs
