So I’m having about 5 people over today for a small get together (swimming/floating/day drinking) and this is my first time having more than a couple people in the pool at once for an extended period of time. It is going to be sunny and HOT all day so I’m not sure what I should adjust my chlorine level to before my guests arrive. It is currently sitting pretty at 7.0 and my CYA is around 30. I know FC is used up pretty quickly with the sun beaming down plus the swimmer load and splash-out.

I already adjusted the pH so no one’s eyes will be burning. I just don’t know what FC level I should have before they arrive (in about 4-5 hours). Should I bring it slightly below SLAM level or keep it around 7-8ppm and SLAM after the party? I’m a pool party hosting noob so don’t judge my dumb question lol! Thanks in advance! :)

Unless your guests will be ******* in the pool normal FC target will be fine.

Test the FC about an hour before the party and get FC around 7 for CYA 30.

LOL!! They are all adults and know I’m OCD so there will be no peeing or pooping in the pool (unless they never want to come over again lol!!)

Do you SLAM (or at least bump up FC to SLAM level) after a pool party just to be safe? I’m so new to this lol. I’ve never had algae or a need to SLAM so I’m trying to take preventative measures here lol

Just a fair warning for when it happens, If you go cloudy, it’s sweat and sunblock related and the filter will handle it, but it could take a day or so to catch up. 5 people will only have 1400 gallons each for dilution and that is not much at all. If it’s more than a quick swim, it will probably get cloudy. Have some tennis balls floating around. They soak up the surface oils very well.

After the party just check your FC level and CC.

Thank you!! I’m thinking about buying some of those “Scum Ball” things that are supposed to soak up oil and all that nasty stuff. Are they a waste of money? If my German Shepherd sees any green tennis balls floating in the pool, she isn’t even going to think twice about jumping in and she’s shedding reallyyyyy bad at the moment lol!

Wouldn't tennis balls (or scum balls) end up getting sucked into the skimmer?
Some people actually like putting one in their skimmer basket from the reviews I’m reading. Otherwise I guess they could “free float” without the pump on? I’m not sure. It would be my first time trying them.

They work great from what I’ve read. Tennis balls are the poor mans version. Either can be in the skimmer or free float. Have your pump running to filter as much as possible for the party. It will need to run after until it’s clear if the cloudy happens.

Trust me, I’m running the pump the entire day, night, even the whole weekend (if need be lol) regardless. I’m about to start hosing off the floats and drop “Miss Queeny” into the pool to do her thing lol

I bought some crazy new floats (a massive swan and a watermelon that fits about 3 people on it) so there may be some photos coming lol

It's great to be concerned but your overthinking it. At my daughters grad party a few years back we had all the nieces and nephews in the pool for hours and ot was fine. With a 30 CYA reading and FC of 7 ypu won't dip below your minimum anyway so have fun and when everyone leaves bump it back up to 9 and let it do it's thing overnight. Have fun!

If your pool has been maintained properly and you didn't let the FC drop below minimum, it will be fine. Although your pool is smaller than mine, I have a family of 6 and we constantly all get in the pool, with kiddies having sunblock applied. I never had to do anything special, just bring the FC level back to max in the evening. Same as I do every evening.

Pool party advice I have learned via the forums.
1. Bump FC up above the range up 20% before the party starts. Basically 1-2 above the top of the range.
2. Take a halftime break to recheck FC level. Add to bring back to the normal top of the FC range.
3. Test after the party is complete and raise back to the top of the FC range.
4. That evening, if time permits, throw in the robot or vacuum to give the pool a good cleaning.

Lastly, I use a hairnet and have a scumbug floating in the skimmer basket. Just added protection. The thing I have noticed from our two pool parties this summer was the amount hair that accumulated.

Have a great day! It sure will be a hot one here in Ohio.
