I just wanted to share the finished product. It took a lot of work but we are finally finished - just have to add the 2x6 cap around the octagon retaining wall.
Level was out by about 5.5". Considering our small backyard, I decided to go with the wood retaining wall and fill with compacted fill sand. I know this isn't the preferred method but digging a hole in our backyard wasn't really an option.
As mentioned, we added fill sand, wet and compacted it, then topped it off with landscaping fabric, 3/4" insulation foam, and Gorilla Pad. Next I added a Hayward skimmer and the Intex cleaner.
Finally, we added rubber mulch and a few plants around the perimeter.
Much thanks to this site! I did a lot of research, which created a lot more work than I had planned, but the outcome was worth it. Pool is probably within 1/4" of level (thanks to rented laser level) and the water levels are currently:
FC: 6
PH: 7.2
TA: 70 (started at 190 and took a week to get it down)
CH: 250
CYA: 70
Salt: 3400
Temp: 88 degees
Thanks also to the feedback I received from other forums members.
