Filter too small?

Im redoing my piping while pool company is working on new deck, waterline tile and new plaster.

To show off I showed the main guy my work so far and he commented that my current filter might be too small for my pool. He's not trying to up-sell me because he actually said that he cant compete with Internet pricing on filters and since I'm already piping he's not installing it anyway (thus he is not even going to give me a quote). So I'm taking his comment as an unbiased advice.

I think my water looks crystal clear but with visible little particles of debris on the waterline. I have always blamed the particles to the fact that I don't have a suction port exclusively to the pool cleaner so my skimmer is 99% condemned to the pool cleaner hose.

What do you guys think? On my signature my pump/current filter/pool size.

A 90 SF cartridge filter is pretty small for your set up. At TFP we recommend the largest filter you can afford to install. The larger the filter, the less often you have to clean it. Your flow rate from a single speed 1 1/2 hp motor is also pretty high.

How often do you clean the cartridge? Be sure you are cleaning the filter when the pressure rises by no more than 25% over clean pressure.

Maybe. Usually you see those filters on smaller pools 8-10k gallons. If you are not having to clean your filter often, and your happy with the water clarity, then you’re fine.
I went with a Hayward Swimclear for my 11k gallon pool, and I only have to clean it once a year, barely. (But I clean it every 6 months because I’m a little ocd like that)
Its twice the size needed for my pool, but I deal with a lot of fine dust here in AZ.
Are you using hairnets on your skimmer basket?

Doh, Marty swooped in like Batman while I was typing. :)

I clean it between one and a half and two months at a time.

What specs should I look for?

Thnx,

Maybe a little on the small size but it seems to be working fine except for the surface particles which are undoubtedly due to very little skimming efficiency.

The one you show is only 150 SF. With your very powerful pump you should go as big as you can. In my view the 225SF is minimum, and I would personally go to 300+ SF. Part of your 'too small' issue is the pump pushing the water very fast through the filter. So with that large pump flow, more SF of filter area will reduce that issue. The other way would be to install a 2 speed or VS pump.

You stated how often you clean your filter. Is that based on a pressure rise of 25% over the clean filter pressure?

That is waiting far too long most likely. If your clean pressure is 10 psi you should be cleaning the filter at 12 or 13 psi.

That is the most likely reason you are getting the small particles. Your large pump is pushing them through the filter.

Looking at the specs on these two http://www.inyopools.com/Products/02201212000434.htm and http://www.inyopools.com/Products/02200011078399.htm seems like the one I sent earlier (150sqf) is rated for 150GPM while 3030 (324 sqf) is 122 GPM. I should be OK flow-wise with the 150spf?

I'm thinking now on the 200sqf version of the single element one (space on equipment pad is not ideal). http://www.inyopools.com/Products/02200011078400.htm

Thoughts?

I appreciate you opinions and suggestions. Thnx.

Looking at the official manual for the 150sfp it's actually rated for 120GPM, almost the same as the 3030. Inyopools mistakenly lists the 150sqf as 150GPM (and 200GPM for the 200sqf!).
