Filter on top of Pentair DE filter needed?

So I am cleaning my Pentair DE filter I wanted to ask about the little filter on the top of the assembly (picture). It always loses shape and is caked with stuff when I go to clean it, which I assume hampers water flow. So I just wondered if I could just leave it off so the water would flow better. Or is it important to keep it on there?

Is there a way to avoid it going concave and getting plugged up? Seems like it is just poorly designed, as the mesh on it always sags in the middle and gets a thick layer of DE and stuff.
Nothing to worry about. Regardless of type, sand (if it has one), DE, cartridge, they all do that. If really concerned, just push it further on the nipple until it touches. If it didn't get a layer of "DE and stuff" that would end up in the pool.
