Filter for auto fill

I'm fortunate enough that the supply line for my auto fill device also provides water for my outdoor kitchen sink upstream. We are thinking about adding a water filter upstream of both items. The thought is that we want it for the sink, we might as well use it for the pool fill. The filters we're looking at are 20" x 4.5".

I'm wondering if anyone else has done this. I read a handful of threads but they pertain to well water or hard water - neither are a concern for me. I wouldn't mind if my calcium hardness got lower though.

Assuming that you would recommend this, which filter would you recommend? I am mostly looking for a benefit in heavy metal filter. Like this one for example

The link doesn't work but one word of caution. You may want to think about "back flow prevention" if there's a sink it also supplies.

A backflow prevent between the ODK and the pool is way more important than a filter.

Why would you want to waste money on filter cartridges to supply a pool with filtered water? GAC and KDF only remove metals and contaminants, not minerals. For demineralization you would need an ion exchange resin. Only the largest size residential water softeners can keep up with the demands of a pool fill.

I suggest that if you want good quality drinking water at your ODK that you have an RO filter with faucet installed there. Most RO systems come with a 3 gallon storage tank for on-demand high-capacity need. RO water will be much better than anything the simple cartridge filter can produce. The waste line of the RO goes to the drain pipe or you can run a long line out to landscaping as plants love the waste water from an RO filter.

We had not considered backflow prevention. That is definitely a cause for concern.

Matt, I think you have a better idea. I'll do some more research on RO systems and come back with any questions.

US Water Systems has some of the best products and technical support out there for DIY filtration installations. I would suggest a 5-stage RO with a hydraulic permeate pump for maximum efficiency. It’s a very simple setup that allows you to tap off the cold water line and provides high quality drinking water. That way you can still use the lower quality water for rinsing and cleaning.
