Pool Guy maintains her 14,000 gallon pool/spa every week with Liquid Chlorine and two floating pucks. He comes on Tuesdays, and here are readings five days later on Sunday, using TF=100 kit. Pool water is clear.

FC 2
CC 0.5
TC 2.5
pH 8.2
TA 220
CH 425
CYA 80
Temp 86

Tap water has TA of 280 and CH of 250

All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

That CYA level is on the verge of unmanageable and as woody pointed out the FC is too low. This is a recipe for disaster. Fire the pool guy, get a test kit, and then you can be the pool boy and she can have a TFP. Win-win for everyone.

Have test kit. See post #1

Already have TF-100. Posted that in post #1, that's how I got the numbers.

Ok, so you have a TF-100, but the pool service is using pucks. FC, CYA, and TA are all out of desired range. I don't see a reading for PH.

CYA needs to ideally be cut in half.
FC needs to be brought up based on the chart Woodyp linked above.
Once those things are sorted out, then the TA should be addressed.

The point of my previous post, was that following the TFP methodology while the pool service is not, is not going to work. Something's gotta give, and right now based on the numbers, the pool service isn't cutting it. You are here, and as a result are far better equipped to take care of this pool.

EDIT: You can keep the CYA at 80 if you'd prefer but you will burn through a lot of bleach/liquid chlorine maintaining the necessary FC.

The trick is to not let the FC to drop below the minimum required to prevent algae, and with your CYA of 80 your minimum FC is 6. Your current FC of 2 puts the pool at risk for algae growth. I'd boost the FC up to @ 10 until the next service visit, then ask them what their target FC is. It's obvious their target FC needs to be elevated to keep your FC above 6 in between service visits. As Numb posted, your pH is too high and needs to be adjusted as well.

E

Sorry to hear about the algae...

You don't need to shock, you need to SLAM. But before you can SLAM, that PH has to get down to 7.2-7.5. I'll reiterate what I said before...if you want to use TFP methodology, ditch the pool service. Doing both won't work.

TFP works. It works beautifully, affordably, and relatively painlessly. But you MUST follow the process. Otherwise, you're just going to keep fighting the same battle you are today, over and over again.

Start Here, but make you follow this to the letter including the prerequisites. Best of luck to you. Let us know how the pool is doing.

Pool guy said he adds 2 gallons of chlorine every week. I assume it's 12%, but did not ask.
But he must have added more, 14,000 gallon pool is now at FC of 29. I think that's over 3 gallons.

I was so frustrated with pool guy's lack of stablizer knowledge, that I forgot to ask when he check pH, (if ever).

Tried to buy Muriatic Acid at Home Depot, but they did not have any, or were out. Just the dry stuff ph Minus

Check out the SLAM article in my signature for the details. The key to a SLAM is the "M" for maintain. You must maintain your FC at SLAM levels to kill the algae. Keep the filter running 24/7, brush the pool daily. Keep it up until you pass all 3 of the SLAM criteria:

1. Pool is crystal clear, no haziness, no cloudiness, no visible algae.
2. CC is 0.5 or less.
3. You pass the OCLT.

Ask us if you have any questions.

After you have finished your SLAM, you should consider getting a SWG would keep you from having to manually dose the pool with liquid chlorine.

May times the put the muriatic acid in the paint isle or in the outdoor section near the fencing/pavers/rocks, etc. Make sure you get the 31.45%

Follow this link and if you put in your store, it should give you an isle #. The sales associates have never helped me find it because it is always hidden.
HDX 1 Gal. Muriatic Acid (2-Pack)-10031HDX - The Home Depot

Quick search of Home Depot in the Fremont CA area, no inventory. Have to go to the valley, Tracy or Stockton.

Must be a bay area thing -- nanny state.

Might need to check a paint store. They sometimes have it.

Good luck.

Great Minds Think Alike.

Definitely would like to get SWG. Got a bit scared when friend of fiancee' said they ripped their SWG out when some pool person said it would hurt the copper pipes. Did not think Financee' had copper piping, as virtually everything above ground is PVC. Including the PVC lines coming out of the heater. But there are two "stubs" of copper going underground conecting the returns for the pool and for the spa. So it appears just the returns well after the heater are copper, for some strange reason.

Any thoughts?
