Feedback on pool quote - Orange County, CA

Hi All,

Being new to pools, I would appreciate some input on this quote. Are the prices normal is my main question, it seems high to me. This is for a 10x18 5' deep pool + spa combination.

Some of the questions I have for the builder:
5.2 Is the steel reinforcing required or is this just in case it ends up being required?
5.5 The Pentair equipment is ~$5500 retail pricing but listed at $11,400?

5.6 Control System is $1100 vs 3600? Salt Chlorine Generator is $600 + $320(power converter) = $900 vs $1500 in the quote?

I can't provide any specifics regarding price, but note that no where on that sheet is Labor / profit called out ;)
Also note that when you buy the equipment retail, you will have a much shorter (or possibly 0) warranty with Pentair.

5.2 is the rebar for the shell ... required.
5.3 make sure skimmer and floor are plumbed "home run" to the pump.
5.5 Equipment choices look decent. Make sure you really want a DE and not a large cartridge.
5.6 Get the SWG

I do not see a cleaner listed?

Welcome to TFP... a great place to find the answers to all or your "Sticker Shock" questions... :shark:

The equipment prices might be a little high, but distributor pricing is often higher than the lowball internet pricing. The pricing also includes install labor, and normally a three year warranty serviced by the pool builder.

A 50% mark up is not unusual. It would be the first place I would try to bargain...

Pool pricing is also influenced by the neighborhood you live in, and your ability to pay through the nose... :p

Seems steep to me. You’ll still need to add decking, fencing, landscaping etc. Obviously it does depend on the area. You definitely want the swcg upgrade plus a robot. By the time you’re all done you will likely be paying in the range of probably $90K. Have you had any other quotes? It could just be that your area is overpriced.

From the pool builders perspective, it is about the same amount of effort to build a very small pool and a bigger pool of the same design.. If I were a pool builder, and had the choice of building a $30K pool or a $70K, pool, I would always do the more expensive one...

I think your initial bid was "I really don't want to build your pool" bid.. :D

As the others have said.. get more bids..

Very good point. When I was building my pool I learned all about how there are minimum costs on things like excavation, etc. Meaning, however small the pool, the PB still needs a dump truck, pay dump fees, tractor rental, etc. Sure there are savings with a smaller pool, but not as much as one would expect (maintenance is a bit cheaper though).

To the OP, there is a thread on “what it costs to build your pool” which may be helpful for some perspective.

So I did get a on the phone quote with another company and they were in the same price range of about $75k for a small pool/spa setup. Seems totally crazy to me, but I guess that's what the market will bear out here? Are we all made of money? I really expected it to cost 30-40% of this price.
 
That’s not true, you may still need an excavator, or dump truck etc, but the rental / material costs are significantly less...you’d pay 30k for that thing in Arizona...CA prices are insane. I’m building my pool for 50% less than the quotes, and I have all the best equipment options, no PB “upgrades”.
 
Diamond spas hit me with 80k for a 10x20 5ft depth Stainless vessel. Figure 3k to ship it and 10 to dig the hole, drop in a deck and install the equipment. Another 3grand for the equipment and that beauty would make you forget all about paying 72grand for gunite which you KNOW will balloon to 85-90k without batting an eye. On the plus side, you won't have 3months of looking at clowns destroying your yard.

California is INSANE for pricing. The question isn't if this is a good deal in Arizona. I offered a valid solution to him getting robbed by his local thieves. If it was my money, I'd ship in vessel and tell the PB to get bent. I'd dig the hole myself, rent a skytrack and drop it in place. Any semi skilled and capable homeowner can install equipment. Youtube University all the way.
