Eye or elbow

While in the pool store talking with an employee, about pumps and filter systems, the subject of backpressure came up, and he recommended to reduce it by removing the eye fitting and installing a 90 degree elbow and said to point it down toward the bottom. I'm not sure which way is right or which way the eye should point to. The instructions with the pool said 45 degrees up toward the surface. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated, as this is my first attempt building a pool, and probably my last as it is way too much work.. Thanks in advance.

Changing the return jet fittings is a flexible choice based primarily on your water circulation. Pointing down might help with overall water movement while pointing upwards would help to push water debris towards the skimmer. Depending upon the amount of returns you have, you might try tossing some ping pong balls or packing peanuts in the water to see how it moves. Whatever fittings you chose, you'll never move all the water around, but hopefully you'll find the right match that will enhance surface movement and avoid dead spots. If you have a good/reliable filter gauge, I would avoid any fittings that increase pressure too much from normal. As a side note, also be careful to ensure that any pressure increases are not attributable to water chemistry clogging the filter. Hope that helps. Stay safe this weekend.

Thank You for that. I'll experiment and derive at the best angle. Right now with it pointed up 45 degrees, when debris is floating toward the skimmer, sometimes it gets caught in the current made by the return, unless it is within 10" of the skimmer. Thanks again, have a good weekend.
