excel pool systems T cell trouble.

Hello all, long time lurker.

I have an excel pools SWG system. We have a T-cell 60k cleaning a 50k gallon pool. We bought it last year (4.2.2024) when a smaller version of it (40k, I know. I wish I had found this page before) broke. We are 12 months into owning it, and only one season on it.
Right now it is reading 'check cell (steady, not flashing)' and 'high salt'. We just are opening the pool, the salt test strips (aquacheck) say that we are at 2400 ppm. I have pulled the cell, cleaned it appropriately and re installed. It was cleaned on the mark last year every time I got the indicator light.

My question is this, and please forgive me, I searched back a bit and did not see this topic. Are these bad cells? This seems like a very short time to have to replace not one, but 2 of these. I tried to register the warrantee with pool warehouse but 'this page has been moved.'

Assuming I made a bad purchase, is there a cell that replaced these from a different company that will still use the excel pools control panel? Or, is there a cell that will straight up replace this one? I checked on several sites but I didnt even see excel products listed.

Thank you in advance for any insight you have!

Welcome to TFP.

Show us pictures of your control panel and SWG cell.

I think you are going to end up replacing the control panel and cell.

Circupool has the RJ60+ SWG.

Hey snif and Welcome !!!

TIL that 19 states have a Troy. Thanks for that. :) Can you narrow it down a little more ? It helps with regional advice like trying to guesstimate what your UV demand and subsequent cell lifespan would be.

Hello, thanks for the replies! I did not know there where so many Troys either.

Let me back up and remedy the lack of information in my posts, sorry about that.

I am enclosing pictures of said pool, I built in back in 2019. Our first swim was not until 2020 because I had trouble getting a crew to come do the floor with me as apparently everyone was putting in pools at this time. It is 24x44 with a 10 foot deep end (49,997 gallons at the fill line but I push it because I have 4 sons and a big well.) I purchased the pool kit from pool warehouse and it included everything. Everything has been great with the exception of the salt system. I replaced the first cell last year, and this week upon opening I see that the new cell, which is less than a year old, is not working correctly.

We are in Troy, Missouri on a cattle ranch. There are no trees or any cover with the exception of our house casting shade in the morning. Other than that the pool gets full sun all summer. The newest broken salt cell was supposedly rated for 60k but we had to run the thing 12 hours a day at 80 percent to get it to hold past 2 FC. Stabilizer we had locked in all last year, salt was great as well. We lose water due to evaporation, but we have several deep wells so when we fill the pool its ice cold water going in.

There are two aquagenies which have built in skimmer and returns, and they really flip that water over. The pump is a hayward super @ 2hp. I plumbed everything except the deck jets with 2 inch.
The filter is also a hayward, the 60k one I believe. We also bought the propane water heater with it and installed a propane tank for it.

I am enclosing pool pictures, and the current state of the pool pad, please excuse the mess, I'm preparing a couple areas for seed and wildflowers. I switched on the salt cell so you could see the numbers, but it has been steady 'check cell' and 'high salt' although the salt strips say we are barely at 2400. We just opened and its been solid rain here, there is no way there is high salt in that pool as we pump it down past the skimmer when we winterize.

I am open to any recommendations for this pool. If I need to switch out systems, so be it. I appreciate your responses and if there any other questions I'm all ears.

You need a Taylor k1766 to test the salt. The strips just don't cut it.

You also need a K1515 fas/dpd test for FC. The comparator block you have is vague and also inaccurate.

Have you had scaling on the cell when you cleaned it ? Acid strips the plates and kills cells. Many clean them because they were told to, without any need to. I was one for years.

A cell run at 80% can be depleted in one year. Cells have a life for 10,000 hours or less. There are about 8,900 hours in a year.

You will use up a 60K cell in about a year.

Thanks for the reply. I will get both of those tests immediately, thank you for the recommendations.

There was never any scaling that I could see, the only changes to the cell was the presence of brown discoloration at the end of the plates.

Ok. No more cleanings. Inspect and return to service.
This cell ran from May 1 (install) until Sept. 18th. From May until the 4th of July it ran 10 hours a day, then 12 from July 4th until Sept
Something ain't right and you should get years from it.

The RJ60+ is a quality product that will last.

Poat up all your #s once you get the missing tests and we'll go from there. :)
