We have had some staining that looks like black dirt stains but won’t come off, we are going to get it re plastered because the pool is in bad shape.

We had one pool guy tell us it is leakage from a nearby transformer and electrolysis is the problem, he recommended a magnesium anode.

Anyone ever have this issue?

Post some pics... check to see if the stain is organic or metallic. Have you tried the vitamin C test yet? I think you need to definitely figure out the source of the staining first.

What is the vitamin C test? I will post some pics later, I haven’t been the best at keeping up my pool since it’s in bad shape, but want to learn as much as I can because I’m getting it redone in the coming weeks.

I know all the basics of pool chemistry because I’ve been doing it myself for 25 years. This is just the info a pool guy told me

Is there actually a large transformer nearby?

I'm definitely skeptical of this, there's a lot of much more common causes of staining and their quick conclusion of something rather odd doesn't inspire much confidence in their diagnosis.

Yes there is an Edison line that runs right over my pool to a telephone pole with a transformer on it.

Yikes, literally over it? I'm surprised there aren't any codes/regulations preventing building a pool under power lines!

That got me too the other day...... I figured it was either built in the 60s and grandfathered in, or 'right over' is actually 6 ft off to the side which still seems like its right over from the right angle.

Probably now there are, my house was built in 1959 and the pool was put in 1966 ish.

The owners of the house gave me the receipt for the pool install back then ... $3500 total LOL

It sucks, I made Edison upgrade the lines several years back, I would love to have them take it underground but it would be expensive for me
