EasyTouch Misprogrammed by "Experts" ... ?

My pool is now 10 years old. It came with the EasyTouch system at the time (the remote is P4HEASYTOUCH2A and Model520546-520547). The pool came with a spa, Pentair pool lights and spa lights, an IC-40 SWG and solar heat. It also came with Blue Square popup cleaners (both pool and spa on same system). Everything works - the problem is with the programming. The "experts" who built this pool didn't program a "Cleaner" mode and never told me that such a mode exists. The only way I found this out was that I finally found a pool guy who knows equipment and changed out some check valves and O-rings for the valves. That got rid of a bunch of problems, but he also noticed that my popups simply circulate water full time. He told me that there ought to be a Cleaner mode to make them work properly but he doesn't do programming stuff (he also told me that the popups were leaking and needed new O-rings, something else nobody else ever told me). So I got busy and replaced the O-rings myself, which went well, and then looked into setting the EasyTouch for Cleaner mode. Before I touched it, I watched a very long video on this subject and it sounded so simple, just open "Schedules" and then set timing for "Cleaner." This is the video I watched. The part I was trying to do is around 35 minutes in the video:

The video suggested that Pool and Cleaner should overlap so the SWG runs all day. That sounded good, but when I tried to do what they did in the video, I found out that there IS no "Cleaner" mode on my EasyTouch remote! Nor is there any such button on the wall unit. There are dozens of "Circuits" but none marked "Cleaner." Maybe the people who built the pool deleted it for some reason? Frustrated, I picked a circuit called "POOL SAM" that had no programs set. According to google, "POOL SAM" would be for programming my pool lights, but I don't want or need to do that -- so, figuring that was just a name that didn't apply, I created a program using POOL SAM and scheduled it as if it was "Cleaner" mode, scheduling the pump to come on at high speed (2850 rpm) when POOL SAM was scheduled. This showed up under the pump speeds as another mode like pool, spa, freeze and solar.

The pump was supposed to come on this morning at 8:00 under "POOL SAM" and run at high speed through the popups for 3 hours, then revert to the low-speed "Pool" mode for the rest of the day. Instead, the motor came on normally at low speed this morning at 8:00 ... and the AIR BLOWER for the spa came on! Everything else was normal. Even if POOL SAM wasn't going to work as my Cleaner mode, it doesn't make sense how a circuit intended for lights somehow turned on my spa's air blower come on? POOL SAM is supposed to be something related to lights, not the air blower! Anyway, I turned off the air blower and deleted the POOL SAM settings. Now I am back where I began - no "Cleaner" mode. The pool simply runs the same speed all the time, 2000 rpm I believe.

This is super irritating because this is a "variable speed" pump and it has NEVER worked as a variable speed pump in the last decade, and NONE of the "professionals" who have serviced the equipment or that I've talked to have ever attempted to fix the programming or given me any clue about how to program it myself so it works. How can I fix this myself? It would be nice to have the SWG run while in Cleaner mode, but that seems pretty much impossible. Can I just create a second Pool mode so the pump at least will at high speed from 8-11 and then at low speed from 11:01-5:00? Will that accomplish my purpose? And what are proper pump speeds for Pool and Cleaner?

You people are the only ones who ever know anything. Thank you for all the help.

Do you have ScreenLogic II on a PC to control and program your EasyTouch? It is a lot easier doing things on Screednlogic then on the outdoor panel.

Post pictures of your equipment pad so we can see your equipment setup and valves.

Here are two photos of my system and one showing the panel. There is no problem with the IC-40 SWG, I just have it covered with a cloth for sun protection. The pictures make it look like it's wet there, but it must be a shadow because I doublechecked and it is definitely dry as a bone. Also, the pipe that is cut off used to connect to a leaf basket that leaked and was bypassed, that is not a problem either. As for ScreenLogic II, that looks like it would be really useful for a pro, but the "pros" around here don't use it (apparently, since they've never mentioned or suggested it in ten years) and I wouldn't trust any of them to install it, let alone actually use it. Also, it's a $715 item on Amazon ...

John,

In your case, having a dedicated 'cleaner' circuit is pretty much useless, as the only thing you need to do is just increase your pump speed.

I can help you do that..

Running your In-Floor-Cleaning System (IFCS) and the SWCG at the same time is no problem.

I just need some info first...

1. What is the automated valve that is right at your heater for?? Is it just a heater by-pass or something else??
2. List for me all your current Schedules.
3. List for me all your current pump speeds.
4. Do you have wall returns and IFCS returns or just IFCS returns?? If you have both how do you select which is being used..

If you had ScreenLogic, you would just need to show me a couple of Screen shots like these..

Thanks,

Jim R.

I think these are what you want to see. Only the Pool has anything set - all other circuits have nothing set for them after I took out the "Pool Sam" one. There are 8 pump settings but only the first four actually do anything. I did not set any of 6-8. I set #5 "Pool Sam" but thought that had been deleted (the air blower didn't come on this morning, though). I turn on the lights manually when I need them. BTW, Pump #2 is a separate pump to run the waterfall. I push a button on the remote and it works, no problem there. Thx for your help. I am going to be gone for a week beginning tomorrow morning but will respond as soon as I can when I return.

In answer to your questions:
1. What is the automated valve that is right at your heater for?? Is it just a heater by-pass or something else?? The builder never gave me any plumbing plans or explained anything. I think it rotates when the Solar comes on but I'm not positive and it's too cold now to turn on the Solar and find out.
2. List for me all your current Schedules. The only Schedule is for the Pool. Right now it runs on a straight 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. schedule. None of the other Circuits have any schedules.
3. List for me all your current pump speeds. See photos.
4. Do you have wall returns and IFCS returns or just IFCS returns?? If you have both how do you select which is being used.. I assume your acronym IFCS is "In Floor Cleaning System." I have 26 popups but I don't know what an "IFCS return" would be. There are open pipes coming out of the walls, there is a floor drain, a skimmer (obviously) and the popups. To my knowledge there is no way to turn off the popups. When they built the pool, the builder told me the popups might not be very effective at cleaning (how true) but would be good at circulating the water (naturally they didn't say this until after the pool was built). This is probably because they have never operated at anything but the normal "low flow" Pool setting. The only "selection" I have is to change from skimmer to floor drain and divide the flow between them (that is the valve at the bottom of IMG 5033, top photo above). I usually leave the floor drain about 25% open because the main issue is leaves and I want them to go into the skimmer.

John,

Sorry... Using the word 'call' was a little confusing.. Just post my screen name 'Jimrahbe' with an '@' sign in front of it, like this.. @Jimrahbe, and I'll get a notification that you are looking for me. It is a way to notify any member here that you would like them to look at your post.

Thanks for looking at my bio.. I am proud of the time I spend in the Air Force.. Not so much for what I did for them, but rather what they have done for me.. In my case, it is the gift that keeps on giving.. :goodjob:

Thanks,

Jim R.
