My pool install was completed a couple of days before Memorial Day. I just took a sample of water to my local pool store and they said my pools pH and alkalinity are high and to add 40 something pounds of dry acid. However, this is a salt water pool and I am reading that dry acid is not good for the salt cell and I should use muriatic acid instead. I just bought 25lbs of dry acid but before I start adding it I was hoping to get some advice from this group. I am a newbie pool owner please help!IMG_4709.jpeg

Welcome to TFP.

What type of pool are we discussing?

Please return the dry acid and use muriatic acid in your new pool. You can read about the differences in Acid - Further Reading

Welcome to TFP!

Do you have your own test kit?
If so, what tests does it include or what beand/model number.

Don't use dry acid. Take it back and exchange for muriatic acid.

When dosing acid, only add enough at any one time to move the pH by 0.4 (4/10) of 1 point.
So from 8.2 to 7.8
Then retest 15-20 minutes later (with pump running entire time) and lower no more that 0.4 agin.
Rinse, repeat until pH is at your desired level.

To accurately manage your pool chemicals, you really need one of the recommemded test kits.

Thank you! I don’t have my own test kit yet 😔. Looking at the TF Pro Salt.

That's a great test kit and has everything the residential pool owner needs to test their pool water.
Also download PoolMath to help track your test results and more.

Tell us a bit more about your pool by filling out your signature with pool, pool equipment (include manufacturers and model numbers) and test kit info. Be specific.
This assists us in providing you help without needong to ask you each time for this important information.
