Draining the pool during winter

I live in California so I will be keeping my pool open for winter but was curious about rain and how to drain the water. We do not have an overflow valve so I will have to do it manually. Above my pump, there is a spigot where I am able to attach a hose. Is this ok to use? Or do I need a sump pump? (See picture)

If this is ok to use, am I also able to use this when exchanging water?

It is OK. Be sure you determine where you are to send the water. Some municipalities have restrictions on that. Easiest is normally a sewer cleanout.

It is best though, to have a low power sump pump. Available at Harbor Freight or from Amazon. I have a 1/2 hp Superior brand. Under $100. That way you are not risking your $$$ pool pump in case you forget and let it run dry.
