Presumably with the solar panels the pump must be on all the time the sun / light is available?

Yes. And of you accidentally run when the sun disappears, you will lose heat from the pool, which is why ideally you need a controller.

I am in Manitoba, my 16' Ultra uses 160' sq ft of panel to keep it nice and warm, but in cooler months could probably use couple more. I use a solar blanket to keep heat in when not in use.
Panels are 2' x 20' long each, connected in parallel sequence.
