Does pool store shock test differently than bleach on a Taylor 2006 complete test kit

Help!
So in a moment of weakness and hope to get my pool ready for memorial day I used pool store shock to clear it up. It is still green. I have added over the last 2 weeks 24 bags of 73% calcium hypochlorite shock (power powder plus from Leslie's) CYA is at 50 and the FC test is reading over 20 for the last 3 days. Is this accurate? Does shock test differently? My pool started as black. It had a ton of leaves and junk at the bottom all winter. Yesterday I was able to sweep and scoop everything out I think, can't tell because I can't see the bottom. My concern is that the test is a false positive and there is no chlorine. I know patients is key but I feel like it's not budging.

All chlorine once in the pool will test the same. I wouldn't be using Cal hypo certainly as we prefer to add liquid chlorine or bleach as it does not have the side effects. Are you testing with your own test kit? Are you following the SLAM Process process?

I don’t doubt that your FC is high. That’s a lot of stuff you threw in there. But it sounds like you have a lot of stuff to kill. If there is solid debris in there, it will take even longer.

Do you have test results from before you hit it with cal-hypo?

Yes, I am using my own test kit and following the SLAM proceedure. I know that I need to keep it at 20+ because the CYA is 50. I just thought that the shock would work a little faster. I'm just surprised that if the FC is that high it's not clearing faster. On the other hand there was a TON of junk in the bottom up until yesterday. So maybe that was the problem?

Unfortunately, I don't, I only tested the CYA which was 0. The water was black from the debris at the bottom all winter so I knew there was no FC. I did just sweep out a TON of leaves yesterday so hopefully that was the problem. My plan was to shock it to clear let the FC come down and use bleach for the summer.

As Jason said, chlorine is chlorine... won’t work faster just because it is powdered.

SLAMming takes time. There are no quick fixes, unfortunately.

I'm confused, first said that CYA was 50 and now saying it is 0. And you've been doing this for 2 weeks with wrong CYA reading and a load of leaves and possible other gunk sitting on the bottom? All the crud at the bottom of the pool should have been removed before you started SLAM. All that nastiness is just going to chew up your FC and with no CYA now, it seems you need to take a few steps back first.

That was in answer to my question about initial test results.

Bob is right, if there is still junk in there, it is impeding progress.
