Does DE really ruin cartridge filters?

Many people here have asked if they can add some DE to their cartridge to boost the performance. (I am wondering the same thing).

Some people and some manufacturers say to add it. Eg. https://pooltek.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Filter-PentairClean_ClearPlus.pdf

But a common reply on TFP is the DE will clog up the cartridge and never come out again.

Is this really true? Why would diatomaceous earth block up a cartridge when normal soil doesn't?

Tom,

I don't know the direct answer to your question..

But, if you think you have to add DE to your cartridge filter, then, in my mind, something is wrong.. I have three pools.. two have DE filters and the pool at my house has a large cartridge filter.

I doubt anyone could compare the water in the pools and be able to tell you which pools have which filter..

Why do you think you need to add the DE? What do you think the results will be?

I do tend to agree with you.. If you can rinse the dirt off the cartridges, why can't you wash off the DE???

Thanks,

Jim R.
