Distance from pool to house/lanai?

We are building a home in Florida, and I'm trying to plan for a pool. How close can the pool be to the house? I know this is regulated, but I'm having trouble figuring it out through Google searching. Is there a difference between the minimum allowable distance to the walls of the home, versus the minimum allowable distance to a covered lanai?

It varies by location so check your local code with the building department. By me it's specifically 10ft from any structure. They figure we'd try to jump if it was less. They're not wrong.

IIRC I believe I saw a 5ft minimum down south once. In thinking about it, I bet the prevelance of cages/lanai down by you removes most of the concern. Up here we have alot of 2nd story decks which are a different animal.

Call your town building department. They may be stricter than the surrounding areas.


If I'm reading Aqua's pic right, it's 3 ft from the water to the building.

Here in AZ it is 3'. But there is a also code that states that any window within 5' must be safety glass. Not sure if it is same in Florida.

I stayed in a rental home in FL and the pool was 3ft from the patio door. Open the door and jump right in. I wouldn’t want it that close to the house if I had a choice.
