Hey all, been around here for several years. I have a 17k gunite pool, build in 2021. Chlorine system with jandy equipment and mineral 2 setup.
I notice several times a year the water gets this weird smell to it. It's hard to explain. I'm thinking almost like the smell of pollen. That weird smell, not fishy per say. I'm trying to figure out what it is.
In terms of chemistry, i use the taylor kit, water is: 2ppm - 4pm chlor, CH 250, ph always between 7.8-8, cya in range 30-50, ta 75, etc. I use the pool math calc and keep all my numbers straight all the time. I do drain off the pool 50% every year to keep cya down. I also swap my filters every 6 months. Water is crystal clear, never had the pool go green and never have had algae growth.
I do shock the pool occasionally with liquid chlor, taking it up between 12ppm and 20ppm, pending the situation. Only occasional though. Like when opening it for the year, after heavy use, etc. I like in CLT, so my pool stays open year round.
Could it be literally just pollen that's making it smell? Even my daughter yesterday said, kind of smells like pollen lol. Its enough to where you can actually smell it on yourself a bit after you dry off. It's not chlorine. I don't mind some chlorine smell. We smelled it yesterday and our chlor was 1.5ppm, so i know it wasn't the smell of chlor.
