Good Evening,
I recently moved into a home With an inground pool and feel as if I bit off more than I can chew. When we first moved in, the pool was sparkling clear but once I turn the filter on dirt flooded it. I replaced the sand in the filter after vacuuming to waste and it was fine for a couple of days until a big storm hit. The storm caused an algae bloom while ive been away for work. I added 5 lbs if shock yesterday and the chlorine reading today says very low (Clorox pool test strip). I raised my ph before adding the shock but today( 24 hours later) the algae seems to be worse and even greener than before. I added one jug of liquid chlorine and an algae killer in hopes of coming out on top. Any recommendations?image.jpgimage.jpg

Hello and Welcome to TFP! You are already ahead of the game by being here. I will suggest you readABCs of Pool Water Chemistry, order Test Kits Compared make sure you add the speedstir, makes it easier to test. Download the PoolMath app and add 5 ppm of liquid bleach every day until your test kit arrives. Post test results as soon as you get it. Dont worry to much the pool is already green. Also stock up on liquid chlorine 10-12% in HD or hardware stores, you will also need muriatic acid and CYA, but dont add this until you test, just chlorine. Please fill in your signature with your pool specs so we can help you better, like mine.

Welcome Q. Felipe nailed it. The cornerstone of TFP is based on accurate testing. Once you have a reliable kit, the folks here will walk you through how to proceed based on what it says. You'll recoup your test kit purchase several times over just on this one time that you didn't take pool store advice and purchases. You will need the XL kit though. When you have a problem such as yours you will blow through the testing drops that come in the regular kits. Once you clear the problem, the regular kits last all season so next time you can get the cheaper one.
