Any thoughts on if they need to be shielded, and if they need to be solid wire or stranded? My guess is that what I have is stranded with limited (if any) shielding.
shielding doesn't matter, I wouldn't bother (Pentair ships with un-shielded cable). solid is probably easier to work with but it also doesn't matter.
the most important thing is to make sure your cable is UV protected (rated for outdoor use) or the sun will corrode it and the rain will eventually cause internal shorts... the cat-5 cable that came with our house/pool failed in this manner
