Delays in "pinkness" of Chorine Drop Test

When doing the Chlorine Drop Test today, I get a definite delay in getting any pink color during all stages of the test. After adding the R-0870 powder, first it was no pink, then as I was doing something else for a few minutes, it began so show faint pinkness. So I started dropping some R-0871 -- two drops cleared it. Then another few minutes of reading the kit instructions and I see the pinkness has returned, so another drop to clear it. So I record FC as 1.5ppm

Then I start the Combined Chloramines and add 5 drops of R-0003 and mixing, but no pinkness. But again I have the same couple of rounds of pinkness showing up late and clearing with R-0871, etc. About 6 hours later it is VERY deep pink in color after being clear earlier.

Are these delays in pink color appearance normal?

The only other test I attempted today was CYA, but I saw no precipitate whatsoever. A previous test showed CYA of 45 (last summer if not before then), if that means anything.

Some possible confounding factors:
•I have a swamp and am adding chlorine mainly to keep the mosquitoes out and perhaps start clearing the water somewhat before starting a true SLAM soon. I added 3 gallons 12.5% chlorine 3 days ago, then another gallon yesterday. Water color changed from green to cloudy blue-green after the 3-gallon addition (is still blue-green).
•My TF-100 kit is about 2-2.5 years old, but not used that much because... long story. Kit too old?; do the reagents have expiration dates?
•I'm a new pool owner upon moving into this house last summer (after 2 years of slow renovations), so am no expert with pools.

I know my pool is an embarrassing mess, but I'm trying to fix it.

No pink means zero FC... if your reagents are fresh. Yours are expired. Might as well buy the full refill kit, else you're just shooting in the dark. Keep adding LC daily until your reagents arrive and you can test accurately.

If the test sits it may go pink again. That one doesn't count. Add drops until it's clear, then move on. If by chance you get sidetracked and notice it pink again, disregard.

Add powder and you get no pink then you have no chlorine. End of test.

CYA tests clear then you have no CYA.

Chance you have ammonia eating the chlorine in your swamp.

When you decide to get serious about cleaning out your pool then get fresh reagents and we will help you through it.

Thanks to all. Every response is useful.

I will buy a new test kit (and speed stir this time). I'll add a gallon of chlorine every day until I can SLAM. I may indeed have ammonia, but I may know about that when I can test chlorine, etc, often and can use the pump.

One reason the pool is a swamp is that the backwash rotor valve on my elderly Pentair DE filter needs refurbishing and new seals (was leaking). It has been out of commission for some time and is now disassembled. I'm about to reassemble with new seals and reconnect to the system so I can use the pump again. I am also adding a 3-way diverter valve between the pump and filter so I can vacuum to waste during this cleanup.
