Deck to the edge?

We are resurfacing our 80's pool and of course that's new coping and new deck and well a patio deck too (talk about snow ball) and I thought I knew what I wanted design wise - we live in an older home and I was just keeping things the same and changing the point of entry to the pool deck.

Well we called the patio deck folks an they are suggesting possibly putting the deck (which will be composite and not wood) to the edge of the pool - something like this picture on their website.

Hubby was worried about the new concrete apron cracking so this seems like it might be a good option. But I'm just not sure if it helps the pool long term if we have the patio deck go straight to the coping.

The second picture seems very impractical and I don't like the look at all. The first picture seems very reasonable with composite decking up to the coping with maybe a 1/4" gap. No harm it in going to meet the coping, it's just not that common for an in-ground.
But it's more about aesthetics I would say. Do you have pictures of your current situation?

Thanks everyone!

Just had the deck guy out and I don't think we can afford all the way to the coping!

Our current pool looked like this 4 years ago - I don't have a more recent pic handy.

Oh -and we have a pool fence now and the sand is gone.
