Debris at bottom of pool......maybe I have algae?

New DE Filter. FC is at 6ppm and CYA is at 50-60ppm. Been losing approx 1ppm of FC daily. Noticed more debris collecting at bottom of pool again. Not sure whats going on. Is it just dirt/pollen/debris from trees or is it algae growing? Its been clean for a few days now and I am starting to see more stuff collect at bottom since yesterday. Been battling this for 4 years and always thought it was my old cartridge filter but now with a new DE filter, it must be algae? What do I do? When I brush it up it puffs into a slightly yellowish cloud. My water is crystal clear and I have no visible algae (green etc) on sides or bottom of pool. Just these little clumps of debris in the crevices at bottom.

Do you have a pic? Im in the country and have the same problem often. Dirt, pollen and dust. We put a knee high pantie hose over our simmer basket (like a skimmer sock) to catch some and we vac to waste once a week when it gets bad. When the pump is off after vac its fine, but the find particles will go to the bottom when its on. These are the only methods I've found to help it, but not cure it.

Check your ladder. It could be providing a nice spot for algae to grow, and then it sends out scouts and your chlorine kills them and you find their carcasses on the floor. Take a look at the pictures in these threads. You'll see what I'm talking about.

Problem Found and Ideas needed

Hmmmm very interesting. I have the walk in stairs and I don't have any areas that would be closed off like that pic of the ladder. We did suspect it was sand bags we previously had stored under the steps to keep them waited down but we replaced the sand bags with concrete inside sealed pvc pipes. Nothing can get inside those we don't think. I have a pic from last year I will link it.

Help me with dead algae dust please!!!!!!

I have a ton of trees behind my pool. It's so annoying I am tempted to cut them all down! I also use a skimmer sock.

Behind and under stairs usually has poor circulation. It would be worth your time to upend things and have a look.

I am sure it does considering it is right before the skimmer and the return just beyond that. Wish I could move it closer to the return but there is no deck there. Is it ok to change the direction of the return to blow towards the skimmer instead of away? Obviously pointing it to the floor of the pool. Wouldn't want to deter anything from being pulled into the skimmer.

Aiming returns is more art than science. It's a lot of experimenting. If you've only got the one return, you're really limited.

Ok so I did an overnight chlorine loss test. Tested 8ppm at 8pm and now either 7.5 or 8 ppm at 5am. Hard to tell because I was half asleep and couldn't tell if the sample was clear enough so I added an extra drop. So in any event it is either the same of down by .5 What does that mean?

This means you passed the overnight test. Congratulations! Because you have an AGP which usually has the skimmer near the return, it is highly recommended that you brush at least once weekly, and if the weather is hot, at least twice, spacing out every 3 days. Also, keep the FC about 1 ppm higher than the recommended levels for the minimum as this will help a lot. You will need to keep things moving as well.

Can you take some out of the pool and take a closer picture? That does not look like algae, but more like Hershey kisses. Maybe something is dropping from the surrounding trees. To rule out algae or something else, maybe vacuuming the stuff up and covering the whole pool for a day and overnight to see if these come to the surface. Algae is a thin bio-film that attaches to each other and shows up as spots and compounds over time.

Wish the internet had better pictures.

That looks like pollen. I had a lot of that last month. neighbors red pine is hanging partially over my pool.
I wish that tree had never rooted itself there.

My pool is bubble covered during weekdays.

If you have any trees or bushes nearby that drop things, your pool floor will get dirty...that's just life.

I cannot grab it, its like dust. It has to be stuff blowing in from trees. I can't figure it out. Driving me nuts and tired of vacuuming so frequently. Next time I am buying a dark liner.

I am going to cut the darn trees down next fall!

I've been battling the same thing for the past few weeks. Same looking stuff on the bottom. When I brush it it creates a cloud of dust. Thursday night I super shocked it with liquid chlorine - held FC level at 30 ppm for 2 days now and added same algaecide. Brushed the pool twice a day. It's now Sunday and it seems to have cleared up. Hopefully that fixed it. If not I'll go 30 ppm for 3-4 days.
