DE Filter Q...

RASelkirk,

The premise of your post is incorrect. You cannot filter live algae. You kill it first with chlorine and then the dead algae debris is cleaned up with whatever type filter you choose.

Often times, a sand filter is quicker at clearing a pool because it does not get as readily plugged as DE or cartridge.

You are certainly free to manage your pool any way you see fit but filtering algae is an incorrect understanding of how pool maintenance works.

OK, I'm certainly not a "pool expert". But I do have 25 years experience with both systems, at least 10 with DE and salt. I have never had a hint of algae since moving to DE and salt, whereas it was a constant battle with sand and chlorine. Many apologies for mentioning what must have been mere good luck all these years!

It is because the SWG is doing a better job at maintaining adequate FC levels at all times and not reliant on a human to remember to add chlorine every day. Or ff you were formerly using trichlor tablets, then the CYA build it is also likely why you had problems because the FC level was not being raised to correspond to the rising CYA. See the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA].

It has nothing to do with the filter type.
