The premise of your post is incorrect. You cannot filter live algae. You kill it first with chlorine and then the dead algae debris is cleaned up with whatever type filter you choose.
Often times, a sand filter is quicker at clearing a pool because it does not get as readily plugged as DE or cartridge.
You are certainly free to manage your pool any way you see fit but filtering algae is an incorrect understanding of how pool maintenance works.
