Hello everyone !

I am the proud owner of my swimming pool at home. Aged at 22 y/o and I will now start to study my pool and get everything where it should. I live in Cyprus, where we have over 86F temperatures minimum in the summer. We have recently drained our pool, and started fresh.
We have just shocked the pool, and pH and Chlorine are all at high, and my kit can not read anything, YET.
Read everything on Pool School section and took many notes.
I can not get any kits you guys are suggesting everywhere since nothing ships to Cyprus.
I can only buy separated kits and this is what I have :
- 2 way kit, Chlorine and pH levels
- 5 way kit, Chlorine, pH, Alkalinity, Acid Demand
- 6 way kit STRIPS, which i am not really a fan of them, but i need them to measure CYA

Pool status : 10meters x 5 meters x 1.3 meter average depth, rectangular
Holds about : 13440 Gallons

I believe I am covered with every measure I can take in my country, at least.
What do you guys think ?

Hello everyone,

I am based in Cyprus and this is the only test I can find for CYA measuring except strips :

What do you guys think, should I go for it ?

Mod note: I merged his two threads to keep all of the important info together to understand the issues he faces getting test supplies and chemicals.

Thank you,
Alex

:wave: Welcome to TFP!!!

That looks like the same kind of test as in the recommended test kits in that it is a turbidity test. Looks like a pretty small bottle of reagent.

You really need the FAS-DPD chlorine test as well.

I can not get anything from your recommendations, since nothing ships to Cyprus and if they do I have to pay triple the price or more.
Check out my Introduction post. I have listed what I have

And thanks for the reply!

Use Pool Math to calculate how much CYA to add then you have to assume that is your number.
Is CYA available in Cyprus?
Find a friend taking a trip to a test kit friendly county and have them hand carry in a K-2006C or TF-100.

I will try to find one kit in the UK where I have a friend coming over in a month or so. Hopefully there is something available. CYA is available in my country yes.
I have read that CYA in general is not found in water pool without adding it and I believe my chlorine doesnt have any inside is dichloro 55% ASTRAL brand. So i guess adding CYA will be the number i put from pool math. Also i have read that it can not be reduced so I will continue with that?

Edit: We have just SLAM the pool so I am waiting for it to calm down to get correct measures and pH levels right before I continue to that.

Please realize that the SLAM Process process is not a 1 time addition of chlorine, like it sounds like you did.
It is a process where you maintain a higher FC level until all contaminants are gone. This is where you need the FAS-DPD chlorine test in order to properly follow the process.

That CYA kit you linked to is the same kind of CYA kit I use. It's a great kit. I love that you pull the black dot up through the water -- to me it's easier to read and more repeatable than other kits. Even when I get my TF 100 kit, I'll still use this Pentair CYA kit.

It was what my father did before i had taken over the pool.

So
Chlroine levels are still very high so is pH.
I am now going to buy CYA kit to test CYA. And post results here.

TFP created the term SLAM for the process we teach. Your father did not slam your pool. He added an arbitrary large amount of chlorine and hoped for the best, something all the pool stores call shocking your pool. Sometimes you get lucky ... until you don't. Just hope you do not damage the pool or equipment doing the dump and pray method.

Shock is what we did yes.
Just came to the shop and they are out of stock of the product I have linked.
I guess I am now left to buy strips? And spend 5 for each test so i can be accurate?
Also the 5 way kit has DPD capsules to measure chlorine so i guess thats good?

That DPD chlorine test likely only reads to 5 or 10ppm which is just not high enough. To make matters worse, at higher FC levels the pink can start to fade and make you think the FC is much lower than it really is.

The yellow OTO does not have that problem, but it generally only reads up to 5ppm.

That is why we are pretty adamant about getting the FAS-DPD chlorine test. But I know you have not found that yet

I did the DPD test, and as you said the pink faded away.
I made 3 strip tests and everything was high and alkaline was high too, with both tests. It took me around 20 or so drops to get the pool sample to red color.
We have added dry acid to lower pH and chlorine if possible. There is nothing else we could do I think.
Should we reduce alkalinity levels? The strips read well over 180ppm and the other test needed over 20drops which is a really high number when converted to ppm.
Ill wait for more measurements after the dry acid was in the pool for 4 hours and go on from there. Hopefully we can be saved

Alright everyone,
We had 2 rounds of adding Dry Acid in the pool to drop pH and as the guy at the store said drop the FC.

These are the results from the 3 way kit (basic plastic) and from the 5 way kit (DPD capsule for Chlorine) and Strips
FC = 3.0ppm (strips 3ppm)
pH = 7.4ppm (7.8ppm from Strips)
Total Alkality = 360 (Drop by Drop from the 5 way kit instructions, total of 36 drops x 10 for it to turn from green to red) from strips 240
CYA= 30-50 (Strips only option)
Total Hardness = 250-ish

I added both results from Strips and the other kits. Hopefully they are correct. What do you guys think? What how should I proceed ?
