This is what I use in hot tub regularly. Little bit of chlorine every morning and some clear and fresh weekly. That keeps tub from going sideways, which has happened before but I do lose FC pretty quickly. I was wondering if I had any CYA in it so checked today. Seems to be around 30-40 ( eyes start playing tricks ). I try to keep FC around 3-5 at least

I thought it would be good to have a small supply of stabilizer on hand. Someone suggested Walmart, Home Depot etc but there are a lot of brands. Any suggestions? Is Clorox a “ no go”. I have 6000 gal fiberglass pool. Thanks

Final question (😂😂). For a 6000 gal fiberglass pool how much cya should I have on hand? I’ll need some when I open pool next year

24 ounces is equal to about 30 ppm of CYA for your 6K pool. That might be a good starting point at opening next year until you are sure the pool is 100% algae-free. Then when the summer kicks in you might add another 8 ounces (10 ppm) to get the CYA up to 40. Or if it's really hot maybe even take it up to 50.

I have a SwG so I’d want around 70-80 CYA, no?
This looks like a good deal at Walmart?…. Could be awful I guess. Was thinking of the Clorox but this deal includes the alkalinity + too

Yes, that product has stabilizer in it.
Since it has stabilizer in it I thought maybe I should use or mix in liquid chlorine once in a while, so today that’s what I did. I won’t require as much chlorine if I eliminate the stabilizer, correct? I’m always trying to dial it in. I literally put one tablespoon of liquid in the tub

The product on the right is dichlor - this is chlorine and CYA together. If you keep using it, your CYA will keep going up

The stuff on the left is MPS. "Oxygen Shock" - It is not a sanitizer, it is an oxidizer, and will help to remove Combined Chloramines, but does not replace bleach as a sanitizer. It also does not add CYA

FYI, you can also oxidize Combined Chloramines with chlorine. You don't need MPS. There is some evidence that some people are allergic to MPS, they become sensitized and it causes a rash. Me personally, I don't use it.

Then I’m surprised my chlorine does not stay steady.
The fc won’t stay “steady” in a manually dosed hot tub- fc is constantly consumed due to the high bather load ratio & during standby- you must dose fc accordingly so you never fall below minimum for your cya
See—> FC/CYA Levels
With a cya of 30 in a 300 gal hot tub where do u think the FC should be? 5 ppm?
Before or after use?
It should never fall below minimum at any time- which is 2ppm.
It can safely be anywhere from min to slam level. Whatever you need to do to ensure it never falls below minimum before your next dose.
In a covered tub the cya isn’t really for sun protection like an outdoor pool,
its for buffering the harshness of the necessary fc levels to keep the tub sanitary. Without cya, the needed beginning fc to remain sanitary during a soak or to keep adequate fc during standby would be too harsh on people and equipment.

I’m sorry, today’s post regarding my CYA of 55 was about my SWG pool. Is it time gore more cya ? I’ve never added it before. New pool
Thank you for all of your info and advice regarding my hit tub too.

You are a fairly new to TFP. Your CYA is 60. Always round up to the next 10.

I'd leave it at 60 for this year. If you get down to 50, add 10ppm to raise to 60 again. The reason I make this recommendation is that if you happen to let FC get too low and you get algae, way easier to slam at 60 than 70 or 80.

Next year, when you are really good at maintaining your FC for your CYA (Link-->FC/CYA Levels) then raise it to 70 or 80.

For chlorination purposes you always round cya up to the next 10 (so yours currently counts as 60)
Around 70ppm cya is a good target for most. If the sun is super intense (like here in the south) some find they need around 80ppm in the heat of summer.
Always add cya in stages as to not overshoot your target. 10ppm at a time is a good idea. Use the sock method.

You also want to rule out algae before increasing cya much so do an
Overnight Chlorine Loss Test first. As dealing with algae is much easier at lower cya levels.
