I'm wondering why the slam level for winter closing is based on CYA and not water volume of the pool.

I understand during swim season your CYA allows you to keep Fc at whatever level you desire. But what role does CYA play over winter?

And speaking of CYA, this year I had it up to about 50 in the early summer, and it stayed there all season, is that normal? I didn't and cyanuric crystals more than once, maybe twice.

CYA buffers much of the chlorine so the active level of chlorine is safe for swimming and does not damage your liner.

During swim season CYA protects the chlorine from the suns UV and creates a reserve bank of chlorine that is released as the active chlorine is consumed.

The role of CYA in a pool over the winter depends if the water is covered or exposed to the sun.

That is normal for many.
