Cost Reality Check

Hello,

I am on the PNW, near Seattle, WA. I have a pool and a spa and am trying to get both replastered and retiled.

So far, I have a quote at $30k usd for this work, it's not a full chip out, they will chip out below tile, around fixtures, around the drain, perform a sound check(?) and chip put any places where they detect the old plaster has delaminated from the pool.

It's a concrete pool, rounded rectangular with a deep end and a shallow end about 22k gals and there is a separate spa at at about 1k gallons.

After reading through many quotes, mine seems insanely high, even for HCOL WA state. Anyone have current 2024 rates for this work? Also, I got this quote last year, but the contractor added 5% for increased material and labor rates. Are you all seeing this too?

The only way to know is to get competing quotes for the work. Usually for a job like that you want at least three quotes to compare.

$30k with out them doing a full chip out sounds insanely high to me. It’s basically a skim coat of new plaster sitting on the old plaster which will not last 5 years before it looks like garbage. If you plan to live in this home for a while, you don’t want a skim coat.

Also realize that at this point in time most reputable pool builders have all their jobs lined up for the year. So you may getting a lot of “Go Away” quotes - insanely high cost to scare you away so they don’t have to say no to a job.

You should get multiple quotes and request that they include the cost of a full chip out rather than a skim coat.

Thank you very much for the guidance and tips. I am pursuing additional quotes now. Finding pool/spa contractors in the PNW is actually turning out to be hard. There are simply not many because pools are not too popular out here.

Are you in a rush or can you wait until off season or possibly next year?
If you can wait - ask them when their slowest time of the year is and do it then.
Chances are you may get a more realistic price by mentioning that up front.
$30k without a full chip out seems ridiculous - was this just for plaster or a full remodel?

New tile, depending on what you are using, can be $30 or more per foot.
