Copper staining and Jack's Magic Treatment questions

Hello everyone -

I am planning to do a copper stain treatment on my pool when my water temperature rises above the 65 degree mark. I took over the pool about seven months ago and used some Clorox products (including blue clarifier) for the few month or two, before I joined TFP and figured out what I am doing. The pool is about 10 years old now, and has some blue/green staining on the steps and in areas around the perimeter.

I have Copper and Scale Stuff as well as the Jack's Blue stuff, billed as "removing copper from the water." I've also read up as much as I can on the Jack's site.

Since I'm new to using this kind of copper treatment, and have become fanatical about following my TFP guidelines for keeping things clean and sparkling, I'd like to make sure I understand what exactly is happening, and how it may affect my system. My questions are as follows:

Am I correct that the Copper and Scale Stuff is what removes the stains from the pool plaster, and the Blue stuff actually removes it from the water?

What does "removing it from the water" actually involve? Filtering in my DE canister?

Will these products clog my DE filter, like some of the junk the Leslie's guys told me to add when I first moved into the house?

Does this stuff "stay" in the water, requiring me to plan on a drain and refill?

Any guidance with Jack's magic?

Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you in advance!

The only way to truly remove copper is to drain the water once you have the copper released from the surfaces. The Jacks Magic product will help release the copper and then it is required to drain or exchange the water in the pool.

I would follow the protocol for stain removal and then dump the pool water. After adding the Copper & Scale Stuff (sulfamic acid), your pH will drop down into the mid 6 range and the sulfamic acid will interfere with your CC testing showing high CC levels. Jack's protocol has you keeping the water very corrosive for weeks and then rebalancing slowly. That will only degrade your plaster. I suggest once the copper stains are gone, likely within 48 hours of treatment, you dump the water and get rid of the copper for good.
