COOLING FAN???????

Now that I have found ya'll.....I'm going to be a major user!!!! So....get ready!!!!

I'm from SOUTH, VERY SOUTH, V E R Y, V E R Y S O U T H......Louisiana.....to say it get's HOT is an understatement. The POOL ofter is LITERALLY Hotter than what you take a bath in.

OK...so, that brings me to my System.....it's in the FULL SUN starting at about 12NOON till the sun goes down. I can ONLY BEGIN to imagine how HOT it gets inside that metal box. So, when people tell me that POOL STUFF (Logic Boards, etc) only last 3-5 years....in South, South Louisiana that translates to 2-4 years.....and I think it's because of the MASSIVE HEAT!!!!

HAS anyone ever successfully installed some kind of fan or cooling system inside these boxes? I know it's SUPER important that they stay dry! (forgot mine open during a massive rain storm,,,,,,what a mess that produced $$$$$$)......but, surly, there has to be a way to cool this down?

You've felt the difference between a car that's been parked in the sun and one that's been parked in the shade, right? Your pool equipment is the same: You'll get by far the most bang for your buck by building some shade over it. And since you won't have to punch air holes for any fans, it'll stay watertight.

How did you not know about TFP? It is the biggest pool forum. Anyway, glad to see another local here. I'm in Houma also.

I think you are right!!!!! A simple LEAN TO or something over all the equipment is what I need....thank you for the idea!!!

Shade is not a bad idea, but pool equipment is built and lives in harsh environments year-round.
Not something to spend a lot of time worrying about...

Good thinking, I think. When we moved in 4 years ago, I was trying to get the broken salt chlorine system working in the afternoon North Carolina sun and 1) blistered my hand on the top of the RS AquaLink control box then 2) discovered the cause of failure to be sensor wires brushing inside the same surface with melted, rigid insulation. It had cracked, so conductors were bare. The attached circuit board was fried. These were low current wires, not burned by a power short. It was the sun.

I built a simple sheet metal "hood" over the top that easily hinges out of the way as needed. This helps a lot, as direct sun no longer reaches the box. Temp now runs ~5F above ambient. That's a good indicator a fan is not worthwhile. What's in the box isn't adding much heat. It's what happens outside.

Pool equipment is tough, but it's not uniformly spec'ed for extremes. An easy example: the residential breakers and relays controling pumps and other equipment have a max temp spec of 60C = 140F. I'm sure my box sitting in direct sun was hitting that. There are ICs on my Jandy boards spec'ed for 85C = 185F. It must have been close to that.
