So we just finished our build and have had water in for almost a week. I've noticed a dead zone in the pool when running the pool return. Granted we are running the pump at low RPMs and 24-7 right now.

The dead zone is right where our pool vacuum is located. Since we are going to use a robot, I'm curious if I can convert this dedicated port from a vacuum to a pool return. Fortunately my vacuum side is directly below my return. My thought is to add two Tees and a ball valve and a check valve.

Any thoughts on this?

That is certainly doable. Use a Jandy valve, not a ball valve (as the ball valve will fail/freeze up pretty quickly). Don't think there is a need for a check valve.
