Converting to salt water and opening extremely dirty pool.

1 Month Update:

As you can see from the before and after in the photo below things are the right color and you can see the bottom of the pool. Things are looking great! I left one of the weights in the pool but brushed it really good so I can have a good reference of clarity. I have been able to brush it every other day and it gets cloudy but the filter starts picking up more stuff so I know it is working toward getting it sparkling.

Do I still need to keep it at SLAM levels or can I start to think about adding salt and turning on my saltwater generator? Other than keeping up the brushing and running the filter I guess I could add some clarifier and get a good vacuum on the pool to try and clear it up more?

Seth- its not totally clear yet :( Only then do you want to end the SLAM (remember it has to pass those 3 requirements: Clear, OCLT and less than 0.5 CC)

Move that weight a few inches and turn it just so you are sure it isn't harboring any algae under there.

The SWG won't finish a SLAM, but once your SLAM is done and the FC at the desired level, you can depend on it then for your chlorine needs.

Here is the picture of the pool.

So I'll consider this clear and I'll check the CC and OCLT in the next few days. After that I assume I will start the process for adding the salt. Should I start a new thread for questions on that or can I use this thread for that part also?

Sethcoop- THAT's what I'm talkn' about!!!! Look how clear your water looks today.
That is amazing, the difference in those pictures!! Well done! Will you be performing an OCLT tonight?

Yeah you can add the salt anytime you are done with your SLAM. Don't turn the SWG on for a day or two to allow the salt to dissolve and mix in. Let your pump run to mix it all up.

I have added Salt and now I am between 3,000 and 3,200 ppm (I get the pinkish color with 3,000 and the brick color at 3,200). My FC is at 18 and CC is at <.5. I have not done the OCLT yet but plan to do it tonight. The pool is crystal clear.

If the OCLT is good then I plan to let the FC drop to 3-4 ppm and start up the Salt Water Generator.

Reading the book for my Hayward AquaTrol it states to prepare the pool water. In that it says if it is not new water then add 1 quart of metal remover and 1 quart of non-copper based algaecide to the pool. The chart says metals needs to be 0 ppm. My two questions are...

1. Do I need to worry about testing the water for metals or should I just add a quart of metal remover to the water to be on the safe side? If I need to test what test kit should I use?
2. Do I need to add a quart of non-copper based algaecide to the pool? I figured that since I did the SLAM this might not be necessary?

Anything else I should know or do before I fire this thing up?

No, you do not need either of those potions.

My only advice is that you want to turn your SWG on when your FC is *where you want it to stay* based on your CYA. I forget what your CYA is so remember to follow this chart (the SWG chart, not the non-SWG part) [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]

Did you ever think your pool could be so clear!? :goodjob:

Thanks! My CYA was at 60 but I will check it again before I fire it up. I need it to be around 80. I will test all other chemicals also to make sure we are in the recommended ranges.

The month of hard work will hopefully pay off when the weather gets a little warmer. I will say the pool is around 60 deg right now and my kids (9 and 6) love to jump in and then hurry and get out. They challenge each other to see who can stay in for longer. You won't catch me in that pool until it is 20+ deg warmer. :)
