Converting from Baqua to Salt - CDX question

First time posting here; I appreciate the resources provided. I wanted to pose a question to the group. First some background:

I have a 24’ x 15’ oval above ground pool (just under 10K gallons). I’ve used Baquacil since we moved here in 2009 as that’s what the prior owner used. We’ve been looking to switch to salt water for a while and decided to use the quarantine time here in PA as an opportunity to do so - we’re home, no one is coming over anytime soon, and it’s still too darn cold to go in the water anyway!

Opened up on Easter Sunday, raised the PH a bit, and then on Monday added some LC to start the process as per the helpful directions on TFP. I then kind of put it on pause for a few days then while waiting for my TF test kit to arrive as I realized I was flying blind and probably wasting bleach (test strips were useless). I got my kit in the mail this afternoon and now I’m ready to go.

Other relevant info: I have a DE filter but I use only Fiber Clear in it, which leads to really short - like 1 hour - filter cycles with the goop from the Baqua; I used a skimmer sock today to try to keep some of it from getting into the filter. I change the sock often but the filter stays ok longer. The LC I’m using is 10% bleach pool chlorinating liquid (from Lowe’s). I changed the liner about 5 years ago so at least I don’t have 20+ years of residual Baqua in the pool.

The last time we added Baqua was when I closed the pool last October. I’ve been using the 3 step - Algaecide, Oxidizer, CDX. I dipped a test strip when I opened on Sunday and it did register some residual Baqua.

All that to set up this question: I’m debating whether to drain halfway and refill or try to use LC without the partial drain/refill. Is there something that would indicate when to pull the plug on LC-only method and go with drain/refill? Does the use of CDX at all In the prior year make the conversion difficult, or only if was added recently?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome to the forum.

Do you have a MPV on the DE filter? If so, set it to recirculate. No need to filter during the conversion.

@Leebo @JoyfulNoise

Unfortunately no. It’s kind of old school: I can filter, I can bump, and I can drain. That’s about it.

With 10,000 gallons, that model of DE filter, and CDX in the water you might want to consider draining. Dropping to water level to about 1/3rd, refilling, and then repeating will remove a lot of the Baqua and CDX from the water and save a lot of hassle with the filter.

Though plumbing in a bypass is not a bad idea regardless of the route you take. Never hurts to have the option.

Update: I think the water exchange was the right call. I drained down to about 20” of water (4’ deep pool) and also paused the process and disconnected the hoses for a couple of days last week while our overnight lows neared freezing again. Refilled on Saturday and restarted the conversion process on Sunday.

Photos show the progress. The first (nastiest) pic was pre exchange. The next pic (blue, but cloudy) was post water exchange before restarting the conversion, followed by the obligatory pretty green post-bleach photo and the sludgy filmy photo from this morning. The last one was about 7:30 tonight - not completely done, but definitely clearing up nicely.

For my DE filter media, I switched from Fiber Clear to the Leslies generic cellulose fiber to save a few bucks during the conversion. I think I cleared and recharged the filter 5 or 6 times in the past two days, but it’s definitely cleaning out the Crud and it’s running nicely right now.

FC at 7:30 PM was 7.5. I added about a gallon of 10% LC which should put it a little over 15. Curious to check it in the morning and see how it holds up.

Random question: when you add bleach, how long should you wait before doing a FC test (using a TF-100 kit)? Is it just a few minutes or do you need to wait an hour or some other length of time for it to evenly dissipate get an accurate reading?

Thanks all!

Photo from this morning: hello pool bottom, nice to see you again!

Held FC nicely overnight. I’m going to check tonight and then again tomorrow morning to see if I can move on to the next step. Looks super clean and clear though.
