I have been using muriatic acid to bring ph back down as it rises, usually once a week or so, have to add 20 oz or so...problem is that I have a lung condition and am not thrilled about the risk of breathing the fumes.

I have done pretty well with it, but frankly, have breathed in a few good huffs on accident while slow pouring...is there any reason why I should not use PH down or something similar to control the ph levels until the TA drifts down to the right range for me SWG and hopefully levels out my PH ?

hubby could do it for me, but I really like taking care of pool stuff myself and use him for building me cool doo-dads and whatnot!

Using pH Down contains suphates which are not recommended with SWGs.

Personally, I'd let the hubster do it. Such a small task is hardly giving up control over the pool and you can tell him how much to add.

he has a lot tattoos that are old/special/expensive and is not thrilled with the thought of a small amount getting on his skin and damaging them...not everyone can understand that, but it is a thing...LOL

can I use the "dumbed down" version of muriatic acid that is not nearly as smelly? I think I was using that at first and didn't realize it, but this last jug was def full strength and I end up getting a whiff of it at least once almost every time I use it. I don't mind the extra expense or havin to use a bit more...

Just have him get a pair of rubber gloves that go up to his elbows. Pour slow into a pitcher to measure the amount and then pour slow into your pool. Very little chance of splashing if you're cautious. Also whats your TA? If its on the high side it can cause your PH to rise. My TA stays around 60-70, when it gets above 70 my PH starts rising.

You can use the "green" version. It's is about half strength but about the same cost. So you will have to use twice as much at twice the cost. The choice is yours.

To reduce the risk of splashing and less exposure time, you can estimate the amount and pour directly from the jug into the pool. Close enough is OK.
After each use, use a marker to mark the level on the side of the jug. This will help with estimating.

It is not wise to wear a mask when pouring chlorine or acid. The scent is the first indicator that there is a harmful vapor, if you do not notice the scent you could cause harm to your eyes. This is why it is recommended to pour slowly, limiting any splashing or gurgling of the liquid. I float the jug in the water and let it slowly pour out into the pool in front of a return jet.

I know exactly what the noxious smell of Muriatic acid is and if I can avoid it by wearing the correct mask I will and would recommend it to others (once tasted never forgotten)
I have to decant from a 20 litre drum to a more managable amount and then pour in as you suggest, but even then you are still exposed to the noxious fumes

Anyone can manage their pool the way that makes them the most comfortable....so you should do it the way you think is best.

TFP's position is that protective clothing and a mask for the addition of muriatic is not as good of an idea as it may seem. There was a thread here some couple of years ago wherein an owner got burns from the muriatic because of the protective gear he was wearing....I don't remember the exact circumstances.

Most of us find muriatic is actually quite easy to handle if you don't make it complicated......aftonJeeper's method is a good example.
