We’re looking to build a pool overseas and have a few items we’d like some input on. Our pool contractor has promised the plumbing and electrical drawings for two months now but seems to be intentionally holding up delivery to limit our outsourcing options for this work.
Our is about a 2200 square foot, 44,000 gallon pool with one 36 foot infinity edge. My calc's show a pump/filter with 100 gallons per minute capacity appears sufficient. THE CONTRACTOR IS PROPOSING 20 RETURN LINES which I'm suspicious is excessive, simply maximizing the plumbing expense to us. H/E i haven't found any guidance on returns for good infinity pool water circulation. CAN U HELP?

For suction, you want to keep the water velocity below 6 ft/sec. For returns, you want to keep the water velocity below 8 ft/sec.

Size.......6 ft/sec......8 ft/sec.

1.5"...........38...............51 gpm

2"..............63...............84 gpm

2.5............90.............119 gpm

3.0".........138............184 gpm

4.0"........238.............317 gpm

If you have a 36 foot long weir wall, then the amount of flow depends on the height you want to get over the weir.

If you want 5/16" of lift, that comes to 226 GPM.

I would do a 4" suction and return line for the infinity edge with no filter.

Maybe the contractor can’t get larger pipe and they need to divide the flow between more smaller pipes?

For the main pool filtration, you want to know the required turnover rate if this going to be considered to be a commercial pool.

Assuming a heavy use and a commercial pool design, you should plan to get at least one turnover per 8 hours.

Do you have local turnover rules?

What will be the typical bather load?

92 GPM is 5,520 gallons per hour or 44,160 gallons per 8 hours.

An Intelliflo XF would be a good choice for the filter pump.

What is the available voltage?

I would do 4 skimmers and maybe a dual main drain.

The skimmers can all be 2” lines.

36 x 61 x 2.68 feet deep is 2,196 square feet and 44,000 gallons.

Are these dimensions accurate?

How far will the equipment be from the pool?

Will the equipment be at a different elevation than the pool?

Will the pool be heated?

Can you show the proposed location for the pool?
