Hello all. This is our first year owning a pool and I’m struggling keeping the pH down. I use the TFP app recommendations and it will improve for a day or two then default back to the below results I got today. I also do the sock in the skimmer with some stabilizer in it.

pH 8.2
FC 5.0
TA 80
CYA 42
CH 420
Salt 3600
CSI 0.54

Water temp 83
Live in north Texas. It doesn’t seem to be weather dependent as it was rainy and cold earlier in the week and that did impact the results.

Added 25oz muriatic acid and filled the sock more today than what I’ve been doing previously. I do keep my chemicals and testing agents outside under our covered porch. Is that possibly an issue?

Unless your covered porch is climate controlled it could very well affect the reagents. Direct sunlight is a problem which it sounds like you don’t have. High ambient temperatures also contribute to reagent degradation. Think of medication storage. Dark and not too hot or cool.

How do you measure a CYA of 42?

What test kit are you using?

Measure your pH 30 minutes after adding muriatic acid and see what you have lowered it to.

pH rising after a few days is normal in many pools.

Do you have any water features running or a spa spillover?

I was reading the test tube on CYA and it wasn’t quite at 40 so I estimated to 42. I use the HTH 6 way test kit.

And yes we have a spa spillover that runs about 10 hours a day.

We recommend you round up. Between 40 & 50 lines we call it 50.

You need the FAS/DPD test kit for accurate FC readings.

Your spa spillover causes aeration that causes your pH to rise.
