Connecting Hayward VSP to enable a Pentair Salt Water Chlorinator

I was told that the Pentair SWC should only be powered when the pool pump was running. Seems there is no connection available from the Hayward SP3400VSP to indicated when the VSP pump is powered and running. You would think you could run power (or a signal) from the Hayward pump that indicated it is running, that could energize a relay that would actually switch-on power to the Pentair SWC. The relay would drain very low current from the Hayward VSP motor. Can this be done? Specifics on how to accomplish?

Hayward and Pentair suggest installing an additional SWC timer that is kept in sync with the pump programming or buy their fairly expensive automation. I was hoping to find an easier, simpler solution.

Joe,

That is not a Pentair issue, it is the same for all SWCGs... A SWCG is supposed to have two safety devices.. The Primary safety device removes the power from the cell's power supply when the pump is not running.. The Secondary safety device is the flow switch.

A lot of people just use the flow switch and it works... until it doesn't... :) Kind of like driving around with your air bags off.. it works most of the time...

Here is a link for making your own current sensor for the pump.. Current Sensor/relay switching for SWG

The simplest thing to do is the external timer for the SWCG's power supply. If nothing else the thread should give you some ideas.

Thanks,

Jim R.
