Confusing CYA results

Hi All,
Hoping for some recommendations on what to do here.

  • My Pool water is testing at approx 55ppm for CYA - which I'm recording as 60.
  • I've got a Sample tube from the manufacturer (Clear Choice Labs) of 50ppm CYA. However when I test it the result is more like 100ppm, but definitely beyond doubt at 90ppm.

I've done this test in all types of lighting conditions and whilst the result varies a little, it's basically the same. That leaves me wondering:
a) is my 50ppm Sample incorrect.
b) is there something wrong with the test tube?
c) what does that mean for my pool water? Our average daytime temp is around 25C (77F) at the moment and the SWG is operating on it's lowest setting on most days. I'll turn it off when the FC gets to 10 and let it naturally drift down to 8 (which usually takes 2 days)

So I'm not chewing through any FC, which makes me think my CYA of around 60 is probably reasonably accurate and maybe the Sample is not correct. Given the importance of the CYA and FC ratio, what do you think I should do to ensure things are accurate?

Other results are:
FC: 10
CC: 0
PH: 7.2
TA: 75
CH: 250
CYA: 60
Water Clarity: Crystal

I have a CCL kit and haven't experienced that, so it would probably be worth calling CCL and talk it over with them. They're super helpful. With your pool running famously, I think your testing is fine and maybe the standard solution is off, but they might be the best to help you sort it out.

And nice to meet you via TFP!

She's a great resource. I was fortunate to stumble across the site just as our first pool install was being completed. So I've avoided the pool $tore learning curve!
Still remember a work mate telling me the easiest way to clean your pool each week was to go out and throw a couple hundred dollar bills into it. He reckons that'd be the quickest way to get the same result [emoji16]
...but I found this site and so far the investment has been 2 bottles of acid and 1 bag of stabiliser (after the test kit of course [emoji16]

Hahaha, that's a great way to describe it, mate. Yep, I'm pretty happy to have found TFP. Before I did, I was told "try a few pool stores and choose one you think you can trust". That statement got me worried right out of the gate.

Interesting thread, I'm curious as we're told to test samples soon after you take them.... I assume they have to ship these clear choice lab samples, would they still be accurate after so much time (days I'm thinking)???

Testing reasonably soon after collecting the sample applies to FC and CC which can be changing depending on contamination in the water, and how the sample is affected (e.g. by sunshine) after collecting it. After adding the DPD powder, the test should be completed within a minute or so. Other measures remain pretty stable after collecting the sample.

Warming up a CYA test was frequent advice here up until recently, so you read right mate. But a member here did some tests, which some others have repeated, and no difference was noticed.

You just need 30 seconds for the reaction to occur including shaking the mixture. There's no need to go crazy on the shaking!

I like to mix it up and then do the reading after I've completed any other testing I need to do. I can not tell a lie - I keep the bottle in my pocket until ready to do the test :)
