Hello

I am a new above ground pool owner (15x30 Chlorine approx 48 000 litres)

When we bought the pool we were given a bunch of chemicals. (see photo)

After a few weeks of getting the water tested at the pool store and buying more chemicals, we've had enough.

We would really like to get a better handle on what we are doing and how to respond using the TFP method.

As of today, our water results are as follows:

Free Chlorine-0.06 ppm
Total Chlorine-0.06 ppm
Combined Chlorine-0 ppm
pH-8.4
Hardness-189 ppm
Alkalinity-229 ppm
Cyanuric Acid-5 ppm
Copper-0.4 ppm
Iron-0.1 ppm
Phosphate-87 ppb

My pool store recommended I buy a product called pH Down (Expensive) to address the ph and to shock the pool.

Any help tips or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum. Muiatic acid lowers ph. Straight cya granules fix cya. Bleach fixes low FC. Please see ABC of pool chemistry in Pool School to start. Check there on how to get one our recommended pool test kits.

Trust these kind folks. The test kit is absolutely essential to getting your pool clean and clear. It might seem complicated/expensive/time consuming, but in reality, you will be totally in control of your pool and know what is going into it and what the effects are. And it's super easy to test, even for a chemistry idiot like myself!

Yep, 5 weeks in with our new pool and I spend maybe 5 minutes every morning testing the FC/CC/pH, and if needed, another 1-2 minutes adding some muriatic acid to combat the slow rise in pH from the curing plaster.

The cornerstone to that is a good test kit linked in above posts and some reading in Pool School (linked above) and everything else is just relaxing in the pool.

Thanks everyone

I finally bought some muriatic acid to drop the ph.

The problem I'm having is I've read conflicting info on how much to put in the pool.

Can anyone help?

It's all in the numbers and PoolMath will crunch it for you.

What % MA?

How many gallons in your pool?

What is your current pH?

What is your current TA?

What is your target pH?

Sorry for my ignorance but what does TA mean?

I will use the app you suggested. Thank you

TA – Total Alkalinity

Total alkalinity indicates the water’s ability to buffer PH changes. Buffering means you need to use a larger quantity of a chemical to change the PH. At low TA levels, the PH tends to swing around wildly. At high TA levels, the PH tends to drift up.
