conflicting water test numbers

Dang. I assumed the shock would just shock
If you have chlorine in a solid form, it needs something to hold it together in that state. It is normally either calcium or CYA. Either of those you do not need more of, so liquid chlorine would be all you would want to add. But it looks like you have plenty of room to spare in that salt cell, so crank it up! I found my cell percentage needs to be tweaked three times a year. The first setting is at opening when the weather is still cooler, and the UV doesn't burn the chlorine as fast. The second time is around late June for me where the sun is full, and swimmers are plenty. The final tweak is towards the end of the season where, similar to early in the year, the chlorine burn off is much less. But throughout the season, I keep my CYA at the same level, with a covered pool like yours, 60.

I don't understand the test kit you are using, but if it is 76 (it would be rounded to 80 with the TF test kit), I agree, too high for a pool that is covered a lot. 80 may be a good number for Arizona summers, but not Chicagoland.

thanks man. I'll admit I'm confused about the relationship between stabilizer and chlorine. I thought chlorine should be kept between 2-4. the chart here implies min 4 up to 6.

I dont have any liquid chlorine, I do have powdered shock that I disolve with pool water before I add it. Unfortunately it is supposed to storm tonight, so I cant shock tonight.

I pulled a new sample just now and will check everything again. cover has been off for an hour or so.

Just checked the FCL. It’s currently at 4.52. The chart says I should be around 6. 4 minimum. I’m gonna close it up and check it again around dinner. That plan sound ok?

Definitely better,
but since you have been riding below minimum I would do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test tonight/ in the morning to be sure nothing has festered - be sure the swg is off for the duration.
