Concrete pool up north

And the upside is that there is copious amounts of documentation in this thread that proves how meticulous you have been in your construction. You know, just in case any manufacturer tries to imply that shortcuts were taken or some such.

A representative from Mapei was out here today. He took a few plates with him so they could get the thinset tested.
I don't have any expectations to have them make up with me for all the money spent. I'm happy if they let me buy their new Kerapoxy design to a very very good price. I have to wait and see what he can arrange for me. I sent him a mail this evening with a few pics that documented the building process and also gave him the link to this thread :-D Do you think he will go through this thread from the beginning??? lol....

I have already bought new white plates for the pool. This time have I choosed a tileplate deisgned only for swimmingpools buy a german company that deliver pooltiles to all over the world. This particualar is called Chroma. I have also bought new mosaic for the floor so I'm only waiting for Mapei to give me an awesome price for the Kerapoxy. This new Kerapoxy is a bit better to work with, not so stiff and open a little bit longer than the old one, but still heavy duty. I have decided to set all the plates in this Kerapoxy not only for the grout. There are some advantages as I see it with that compared to cement based thinset. Most important.... It shall lead to a perfect bond and you get a watertight layer on the concrete, even if the pool itself is water tight. Touch wood :)

I will remove all the plates from the pool with start tomorrow. Two mates will come by and help me with that. Then is the plan to grind the surface compleatly next weekend and asap after that start with the tileing. If I choose Mapei's products I will let their technicians tell me exactly what I need to do to prepare the surface and also where I shall place my expansion joints. Expansion joints shall be placed as a thumb of rule in every square of 6m. So that means that I shall have one in the middle of the pool but I will let them decide to a 100%.
Just like Solarboy said a few post's ago about how he choose not to use primer on concrete pools outdoors just the same information have I've got from a person with very long experience in the tile industry. So I would rather skip that If I can choose but again I will follow instructions to hundred percent so I will have some sort of warranty on the job.
Hopefully can I arrange for someone to work with me with the tileing. I can't afford to have someone to do it all for me but if I can meassure and mount the first line of tiles, then is it more or less to just put them on top of each other. Another 7500 plates
hahaha, it's all good, tileing is not so bad the worst is the grouting but as I said ealier, using epoxy as a thinset would ease that process a little bit and with the new Kerapoxy I'm hoping for a smooth ride

later friends

Hopefully the people at mapei will do their best to help you out with this terrible situation. I have read your thread, and if their representative does their should be no question of your skills as a craftsman or the superior quality of your work. I hate that this has occurred and I am confident you will be able to make it right once again. :goodjob: Good luck, best wishes. If it is any consolation, on a positive note, Myself and I am sure many others here are going to be excited to see more pics of your fantastic craftsmanship!

hahaha Rob :-D thank you very much!!!! and Solarboy I appreciate your helping hand, means alot to have someone experienced as you looking over my shoulder. If you have any thoughts on epoxy as thinset I would be glad if you told me what you know or anyone else for that matter.

I have bought new pool tiles similar to the previous ones except for this ones are made by a company specialized on pool tiles http://www.agrob-buchtal.de/en/cd/produ ... l?pe_id=88 and they are slightly bigger then the old ones. I have also bought a tremndously nice glas mosaic. with that being said you all know that I will redo everything and not save either the stairs nor the waterline that I considerd first. I have also 353lbs Kerapoxy waiting for me. I will use Kerapoxy both as a thinset and as a grout. 10 tubes of silicone caulk especially for pools have I also bought and a primer to make sure that it will get a good bond in the expansion joints where it will be used.

The only thing missing now is some determination to go through this once again, but I'm getting there! I can feel it coming, just give me a few more days :-D
last bot not least happy "midsummersday" I know that this is a scandinavian holiday but anyway happy midsummersday everybody......

Here is a pic of the new glas mosaic.[attachment=0:svutn6im]new glas mosaicnew tile.gif[/attachment:svutn6im]

Mats, my friend, I'm sorry I haven't posted earlier  - things have been a little hectic in 'Wasteland' the past few months :(

Knowing how much work and effort you put into this pool, I'm sure you will not stop at this point and will make the proper fix :goodjob: It just sucks that you have to re-do what you did ~ perfectly, the first time.

My thoughts and prayers are with you - if I can help at all, just let me know

Thanks for the support everyone :)

I have contracted two people that will re-tile the pool for us.
There is no way I can find motivation and the strenght to do it myself after less then a year. So I had no other way to go but to hire it out.
Despite all the misfortune with the pool have I succeded to make good deals both with the purchase of the glas mosaic and the tiles. Mapei has also choosed to let me buy their Kerapoxy to more or less to their cost price. No more then right after what I have experienced with their products.

I have been very busy with my job lately but I will be home again this friday when I also starts my 5 weeks long vacation  So this saturday is ear marked to grind all the surfaces and put a roof over the pool so it will be ready for the contractors to their job next wendsday. They calculate with approx 3-4 weeks to get the pool ready. So their is a small chance that we can squeeze out a few bath in the "new pool! this late summer. One thing is for sure! When then water is in, will I let the heat pump run 24/7 if the weather allows us.

BTW! Stucco on the walls are compleatley done and turned out very nicely so there are small steps in the right direction even after this(may I call it!!!) disaster......

update!
The pool is now grinded and carefully washed. I have built a roof over so the two persons that I have hired could start the job with tileing the walls today. And so they did for a bout an hour and a half. It was all it took for me to see that they didn't had a clue what they were doing. This is despite I have asked them over and over if they were comfortable to work with epoxy, written out straight guidelines how it should be done and all the respons I have had from them is - No problems Mats, let us take care of it.
I had prepared everything for them so they could give their full attention to get this job right, with the best result possible. I had built a small desk on wheels so they would have somewhere to put their things and not have to crawling around on the floor. Tiles was taken down in the pool and also placed on wheels so they could push them around instead of carrying them around. Floor was covered with tarps, if they were dropping something which they did a lot, looked like there had been a couple of five years old playing with dough after they left. I had cut the aluminium straight board in the right lengths for them to place the tiles on at the bottom. All the gear you could think of Had I bought, everything was ready to do a great job and I should just serve them with epoxy wich I had devided in smaller protions using a scale so the propotions should stay exact. So what did they do..... They started right away to mix one portion of epoxy without even first meassuring the pool and pointed out where to start the job. Then they spread a thin layer on a 7,5m long wall even where the waterline tiles should be wich I personally should have waited with. When I saw that I just flipped and told them to get the **** out of my pool and properties before they would do more harm. When I told them that this is NOT they way they should work with this type of adhesive one of them started to eyball out some of the epoxy from an un open bucket and should pour in some of the harderne. He was thinking he could save the situation by starting to double glueing the tiles :grrrr: It was a long time ago I went so angry and I told him a few words that I don't want recite here.
I'm so dissapointed right now so if I could turn back time I never would have started this project in the first place.

I just can't belive how someone can go out and undertake work for other people and claim that they know their job when it is so obvious that they don't. They knew that I have done it myself the first time and I have showed them pics of the pool and the tiles so they knew what results I was after.

We have decided after the shock today that there are no other route to go but to do it ourself, once again!!!!!!. But not until everything else is finished around the pool. I just have to spend a half a day cleaning up after them and take care of the mess they left, something I will do first thing tomorrow so I won't be reminded of this(what should I call it) day again.

Sorry for the long post but I just had to write it out of me and where could be a better place to do so :)

hahaha ohm boy I knew you would. I can feel the love from here that you all send out to me
But it's all good really!! I'm very fortunate when everything comes around.
It is just tiles and a pool and I feel much better today. The sun is shining and I'm sitting here with my green juice containing lemons, lime, parcely, apples, habaneros. A real energy boost :)

We will take an hour walk after we finish this juice then we heading towards Denmark to pick up the marquess that I have bought over the net. Shall be really funny to get that thing up in the kitchen :) I will spoil you with a pic once it's done

This is the best forum ever and I never gonna stop posting in this thread

Mats I knew when you started talking about hiring someone that you were in trouble. It is next to impossible to find tradespeople that care as much about your project as you do. They exist, as evidenced by the fine folk who contribute on these boards, but it's difficult to find them. I lucked up on my tile guy, all he cares about is the aesthetic quality of the job, unfortunately sometimes at his own expense.

I wish you luck with your tiling and look forward to pics!

Mats,

I've followed your thread for quite some time and feel for you. I am not quite as detailed as you, but I do expect at least a high level of professionalism when I'm paying a good penny for work to be done, and I can tell you the work I got from my PB, I could have done circles around his crew. I've resorted to doing it all myself also, but as you would really like to find someone who cares as much as we do. Just know that it does wear you down, but it doesn't take long to forget the hardships when it's all complete. I have been working on my pool since last August and I have probably 4-5 months to go before it's at what I would considered a completed stage. It's just too unfortunate you won't be able to enjoy it in 2011. 2012 will be a much better year Mats.

Mats,

I have laughed and cried through your post with your highs and low's. As one that has been dreaming of taking on a project just like yours I applaud your courage, determination, skill and attention to detail. I hope that all is well and I like so many others on this forum send best wishes for a happy conclusion to your pool project. One thing I have learned from your project is I believe I will be building a vinyl liner pool  . all the best.

Chris
