Combined Chloramines

Should I still be aerating?

is it safe to be in after MA?

looked at chart ..... honestly I’m not sure how to base Ma dose off of it? Can you explain it perhaps ?

I can see in pool math how much Ma it wants me to add based on pH and alk but not sure how CL and cya figures in.

if it’s a high dose do you do it in divided doses or one big swoop ?

sorry I’m a pain.....

Aerating is used to raise pH, you should lower pH since you got a reading while the FC was below 10. I would aim a little short of 7.2, maybe 7.5 if you aren't used to adding acid. Better to "undershoot" a little and add more after retesting.

Yes, it is safe to get in the water after adding MA if the water is clear to the bottom and pH is in the 7s. It mixes in pretty quickly.

Pool Math: make sure your volume is correct at the top. Put 8.2 in Now. Put 7.5 in Target. It will calculate on the right how much acid to use. Make sure the % acid is right also. I see you have it now.

Not a pain, always safe rather then sorry!

I would personally do a partial dose, and recheck in 30min, yes it's safe after a few min or so :)

I haven't made it through the whole thread, but if you initially adjusted the pH to the lower 7s and it testing today above 8 I would turn the eyeball down. I'm going to go read some previous pages to understand at what point in the process we are and what our current goal is.

e: I see that a while back you had a pH of 6.8. The eyeball aeration was to just get it into the 7s. At this point, as long as you don't have a pH lower than 7.0 I would not have it pointed up. If this is somehow related to TA there is no point in messing with TA in the middle of a SLAM.

Got right back on the slam boat
Did 4 tests and 3 additions since last post

final numbers for the evening
FC 13.5
CC .5 or less

hopefully there’s overnight progress or at least I’m close

pH crept up to 7.8 today, got it back down to 7.5.

Chlorine seemed to hold reasonably today

evening #s FC 12.5, CC 0.5 or less

hope I break through tonight because I’m almost out of powder and my refill doesn’t come until Tuesday ..... and this was a new kit this year too

So I think I got it !!!

0530
FC 11.5
CC .5 or less, if there was a color change it was barely visible

Should I slam one more day to be sure ?

if not where do I go from here ?
That is entirely up to you. One more day will not hurt anything other than your husband thinking you (and us by extension) are crazy.

If you decide to end it, just let your FC drift down to the target for your CYA and always keep it there.

Pour an adult beverage and enjoy the day!

Now, thinking ahead to next year......

Close your pool late. You want the water temperature to be down to a maximum of 60, 50 would even be better before you close. The following year, open early. You want the reverse to be true. Open the pool when the water is in the 50 - 60 range. Algae growth is severely stunted in cold water , so if we keep chlorine in the water until it's nice and cold and then start adding chlorine before it warms up the chances of opening a clear pool are much improved.

I will probably keep it at SLAM today just to 100% make sure I passed that OCLT. I’m assuming that that barely visibly color change when testing CC is acceptable ?

also, I guess in need to go into a cycle of muriatic acid / aeration until i can get my TA down ? Last test it was 150

I kept the slam going one more day even though I passed the OCLT sat into Sunday.

Well when I tested the this morning (I’ve stayed on my schedule of 9pm and 5-530am) I failed again. Went from FC of 12.5 to 10 this morning, and depending on time of day I test I either as 0 color change for CC or a very small change (0.5 or less).

So should I continue on as if I’ve never passed or let my chlorine drift down to 4 and see what happens ?

I'm no chemist but my instinct would be to raise the SLAM FC level higher than 12 in order to speed things up.

Mike.

EDIT - This would also compensate for debris blowing into the water. The pollen in my yard is incredible this past week or two.
